The School of Law and Government

The School of Law and Government is an ambitious, research-intensive school. The School and wider Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences have a strong and growing cohort of staff specialising in environmental politics, law and social sciences and contribute actively to scholarship as well as societal discourses in these areas. In 2018, DCU launched the MSc in Climate Change: Policy, Media, and Society, which brings together the University’s teaching expertise across the social sciences, humanities, and related disciplines. The School of Law and Government has over forty research students and offers a structured PhD in Politics and International Relations.

The DCU Centre for Climate and Society is a new research centre that aims to provide cutting edge research, innovation and engagement on the societal dimensions of climate change by bringing together DCU’s significant expertise in the humanities, social sciences and related disciplines as they relate to climate change. The Centre is the first climate change research centre in Ireland with a core focus on humanities and social sciences perspectives.

Role Profile

Dublin City University is seeking to appoint Lecturer Below the Bar in Climate Change Politics and Policy for a period of 10 months, commencing at the latest in September 2021. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching climate change politics and policy at undergraduate and master’s level in the School of Law and Government, and will play an important role in the development of the DCU Centre for Climate and Society.

Duties and Responsibilities

The main duties and responsibilities include:

Teaching and learning:

  • Teaching climate change politics and policy to students on DCU’s MSc in Climate Change: Policy, Media and Society master’s level, including all aspects of teaching and assessment;
  • Co-teaching climate change politics and policy at undergraduate level to students on DCU’s BA in International Relations;

Research and Scholarship:

  • Identifying research funding opportunities for the Centre for Climate and Society and contributing to preparing research proposals;
  • Building the research profile of the Centre for Climate and Society;

Service and Contribution:

  • Working with the co-directors of the Centre for Climate and Society to help to build research and policy networks;
  • Contributing to management and administration of the Centre for Climate and Society.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should ideally be PhD qualified (or close to completion), in political science or a cognate discipline, with a focus on climate change.

The candidate should also have:

  • Experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including module design and delivery;
  • Research profile on climate change politics and policy, including an emerging record of peer reviewed publications;
  • Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills;
  • Experience of drafting research funding applications;
  • Proven ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting;
  • Strong interpersonal and organisational skills;
  • Knowledge of the Irish climate change policy landscape.

Mandatory Training

The postholder will be required to undertake the following mandatory compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, and Data Protection (GDPR). Other training may need to be undertaken when appropriate.
