The School of Law and Government

The School of Law and Government at Dublin City University engages in cutting-edge research on national and international legal issues, and local, national and global political challenges. We deliver a suite of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, as well as supervising postgraduate research at both Masters and PhD level. The School also hosts the Law Research Centre, wherein our legal scholars explore the impact that law has on society and how society can impact upon the evolution of law. Our research moves beyond doctrinal analysis to engage the lived experiences of those subject to the law and to analyse the development of the law in its political, social and economic contexts.

The Project

Associate Professors Yvonne Daly and Vicky Conway are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on their European Commission-funded research on the right to silence in police custody (Project ID: 802102 Call: Just-JACC-AG-2017). The successful candidate should be available to start on 1^st October 2019. This project brings together researchers from Dublin City University, Maastricht University, Antwerp University and KU Leuven, to examine the exercise of the right to silence in police custody across four European jurisdictions (Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy). It will involve both a legal study and an empirical study, the hosting of an international expert symposium, the creation of factsheets and videos for dissemination, the facilitation of training, as well as writing scholarly papers and reports. The postdoctoral researcher will be heavily involved in the gathering and analysis of empirical data and, as such, prior experience of quantitative research methods, in particular, would be an advantage. Qualitative research skills would also be useful as it is foreseen that this project will involve the conduct of focus groups, observations, and the distribution of vignettes.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to his/her Principal Investigator(s) the Postdoctoral Researcher will:

• Conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of the Principal Investigator(s)
• Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which he/she is engaged with the support of and under the supervision of the Principal Investigator(s)
• Engage in appropriate training and development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator(s), the School or Research Centre, or the University.
• Liaise with both internal and external stakeholders including industry and academic partners/collaborators
• Carry out administrative work associated with the programme of research as necessary

The Candidate

Candidates from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds may apply, e.g. law, psychology, sociology etc.

Applicants should have a PhD in their relevant discipline.

Associate Professors Daly and Conway are looking for a postdoctoral researcher, with excellent organisational skills, empirical research experience, and strong critical, analytical and professional writing abilities. Prior knowledge of the law on the right to silence, or criminal procedure more generally is not a pre-requisite. While training will be provided in relation to the specifics of the project and the empirical aspects thereof (focus groups, observations, vignettes), it would be very advantageous for the successful candidate to have prior knowledge and experience of these or similar methodologies.

Ideally, the successful candidate will work full-time. However, applications from candidates who are available to work 4 days per week (80% FTE) will also be considered.

Salary Scale: €37,223 - €39,529 (IUA Level 2 Point 1 to 3)

*Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and will be made on the appropriate point of the salary scale
