Nurse Clinician – Duke University Hospital – Day Shift

Duke University Health System- Duke University Hospital seeks to hire an experienced Registered Nurse who will embrace our mission of Advancing Health Together.

Department Profile:

The Transplant Department at Duke University Hospital is seeking a Nurse Clinician to work with patients in the liver/intestine program. Our team is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience, every time. The work is focused on the referral process for possible adult and pediatric liver/intestine transplant candidates.  Support for post transplant testing/ medications/ infusions/ patient disability is also assigned.

Nurse Clinicians work with our liver/intestine transplant referrals to complete a medical chart review and interview with patient to assess to eligibility.  Nurse Clinicians are also responsible for patient education of the evaluation process and expectations for transplantation.

This position allows for introductory level outpatient nursing for the specific liver/intestine transplant population. 

Work Hours & Shifts:

Full Time: Day Shift, Monday –Friday 8am -4:30pm.  No holidays or call required.

Job Summary:

The Nurse Clinician is responsible and accountable for clinical expertise for specific patient populations. The incumbent functions as a clinician, educator, investigator, consultant and leader. Clinical judgments are based on a synthesis of current research, concepts, principles, theories, and outcomes to solve complex problems. The Nurse Clinician functions as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team, contributing to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and in providing leadership to the organization. 

Work Performed

Provides specialized nursing treatment, care, and education to patients in accordance with physician/nursing orders and established policies and procedures. Serves as a resource to patients and families, providing preoperative counseling and follow-up problem solving after discharge from the hospital.

Coordinates the development, utilization, and evaluation of appropriate educational resources and interventions that assist the patient/caregiver in developing the skills for self care. Promotes evidence-based practice through staff education and participation in developing, implementing, and evaluating process standards such as plans of care, protocols, and guidelines. As an APS member, collaborates in preparing standardized orders (CPOE) and protocol-driven practice updates and reviews.

Assesses the educational needs of the patient/caregiver as it relates to the disease process, alterations in function, and assimilation back into the home and community. Utilize current nursing and clinical research to support evidence-based clinical decision-making and practice Participates in quality/performance improvement programs and projects, product evaluation, outcomes evaluation studies and/or clinical research..

Utilizes teaching and learning theories to assist patients and families with physical and emotional impact of body changes and chronic illness. Provides clinical experience in a preceptor role for nursing students attending institutions that have contractual agreements with DUHS. Participates in the orientation of new nursing staff and provides expert coaching and guidance through both formal and informal one-on-one teaching with nursing staff.

The work environment involves risk discomforts that are typical of an acute care setting to include working with patients under isolation and universal precautions. It requires safety precautions, ongoing education and health risk monitoring. Contact with specimens, chemicals, sharps, radiation, technical equipment and fumes are possible. Employees are required to wear personal protective attire according to hospital policies and OSHA guidelines. The work activity and patient acuity levels can create a stressful atmosphere.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Required: 

  • Previous work experience (3+ years) as a clinical nurse is required.
  • BSN required  

Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:

  • Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.
  • BLS (or higher) certification required.
  • Professional specialty certification (preferred).
