Position overview

The Lead Digital Analyst reports to the Director of Social Media & Analytics within the Communications Department at Johns Hopkins University and is responsible for analyzing and synthesizing data from an array of different sources to provide tactical and strategic insights and recommendations.

The Lead Digital Analyst will analyze performance data on Johns Hopkins’ central digital and social media channels, and use social listening and media monitoring tools to glean valuable insight about the external online conversation as it pertains to the University. The individual in this position provides digital performance reporting to the Communications team. He/she will also distribute online conversation insights and dashboards to the Media Relations group within the Communications team, and to designated individuals elsewhere in the University. The Lead Digital Analyst works closely with the Department’s Digital team in using insights to inform broader communications strategy, and with the Media Relations team to help shape the University’s media approach.

The Analyst works closely with the Issues & Crisis Manager within the Communications department to track issues and potential crises of importance to the University, and, in an actual crisis, to provide timely information and analysis concerning the online conversation as it relates to the crisis and as it may inform the University’s response.

The Analyst is also responsible for helping manage the Department’s relationship with vendors of monitoring and analytical software and services.

The goals of the Lead Digital Analyst are to help the University reach and engage with our stakeholders and other audiences in a positive way, to give the University a high degree of situational awareness of the issues and enhance the visibility of the University.

Required experience and skills:

The Lead Digital Analyst should have strong judgement for assessing the impact of a wide range of digital and social media and offering analytical insights in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate preferably will have 3-5 years’ experience in digital communications, with an emphasis on monitoring, reporting, and data analytics. Experience in higher education is not required but is helpful.

A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is a plus. Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Two years related experience required.

The ideal candidate will also possess:

  • 3-5 years using social listening tools
  • Experience in website traffic analysis using Google Analytics and/or similar applications
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and translate that analysis into specific and actionable communications plans and reports
  • Strong writing and speaking skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office
  • Knowledge of paid digita/social media marketing and email distribution analytics
  • Experience with a combination of digital analytics and social listening platforms, such as Brandwatch, SocialStudio/Radian 6, SproutSocial, Simply Measured, Moz, Buzzsumo, and other similar platforms useful for developing strategic communications and marketing insights

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
