Research Assistant Professor in Railway Engineering (Ref 18082206)

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering enjoys a high reputation in application-oriented research and has well established connections with industry partners and government agencies in Hong Kong and beyond.  The Department, together with the National Rail Transit Electrification and Automation Engineering Technology Research Centre (Hong Kong Branch) (CNERC-Rail), which is established for developing innovative solutions for improving railway safety and tackling the most challenging problems in the railway industry, are seeking a highly motivated individual with a PhD degree with research expertise in Railway Engineering.  The new appointee will add to the existing research strengths in Railway Engineering of the Department and CNERC-Rail, and strengthen the cutting-edge research in the areas of Structural Engineering and Railway Engineering.

The appointee will be required to (a) initiate, lead and participate in research activities in the area of railway and structural monitoring and sensing technologies leading to publication in top-tier refereed journals and award of external research grants; (b) teach subjects in the disciplines of Structural Engineering and Railway Engineering at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; (c) supervise projects and theses of students at various levels; (d) engage in collaboration with top research institutions in railway science and foster links with the profession in relevant enterprises and universities both locally and internationally; and (e) contribute to departmental and CNERC-Rail’s activities.

Applicants should have (a) a PhD degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent areas; (b) a strong record of research and scholarship in the areas of railway engineering and structural engineering; (c) excellent English proficiency, in particular speaking skills to give lectures, host seminars and make speeches at international conferences for promoting CNERC-Rail globally; and (d) demonstrated outstanding ability in collaboration with international professions and research grant application, and excellent potential for developing a successful academic career.  Preference will be given to those whose doctoral research is related to railway engineering, and with research and work experience in relation to railway structural health monitoring, smart materials and sensor development.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service

The remuneration package for the Research Assistant Professor post is the same as an Assistant Professor post. A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered.  Appointment for Research Assistant Professor will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract for up to three years. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.  Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application.
