The Open University’s purpose is to widen and deepen human knowledge and understanding, whilst promoting educational opportunity and social justice.  It is the leading university for flexible and effective distance learning, as well as innovative, world-leading research, in the United Kingdom and in over 100 countries worldwide.  The OU is uniquely placed to understand the needs of part-time students, combining high quality learning with innovative, award-winning distance teaching credentials, which has seen over 2 million students receive an education, who would otherwise be denied this by a campus based education experience.

Comprising over 35,000 students, 1,500 staff (full-time and associate) and an annual income of around £86m, the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies (WELS) is one of four faculties and is an important part of The OU.  It brings together the School of Health, Wellbeing and Social Care , the School of Education, Childhood, Youth and Sport and the School of Languages and Applied Linguistics.  WELS takes an innovative approach to teaching and learning; develops collaborative and effective partnerships with employers and other institutions; and engages in cutting edge, action oriented and internationally recognised research.

The Executive Dean is the chief academic officer and, as head of a business unit, also the chief administrative officer for the Faculty, with accountability to the Vice-Chancellor in respect of its overall management and financial performance.

An inspirational candidate is sought, able to grow WELS whilst being central to the overall leadership of the University. This is an exceptional opportunity to make an important impact as The OU embarks on the next stage of its strategic development, with a particular focus on academic excellence and the student.

You will be an outstanding academic leader, able to operate at scale, bringing professional credibility and the strategic leadership capability to set the agenda for the Faculty.  Effective ambassadorial skills internally and externally will be essential; the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the ability to make imaginative connections, and optimise the links between teaching and research, maximising the opportunities for students and society.
