Vice President, External Relations

The University of British Columbia - Vancouver, BC

The University of British Columbia is a global centre for research and teaching, consistently ranked among the top 20 public universities in the world. Since 1915, UBC’s West Coast spirit has embraced innovation and challenged the status quo. Its entrepreneurial perspective encourages students, staff and faculty to challenge convention, lead discovery and explore new ways of learning. At UBC, bold thinking is given a place to develop into ideas that can change the world.

UBC attracts, nurtures and transforms 65,012 students from 156 countries on two major campuses in Vancouver and Kelowna. With a $2.6B budget, research funding at $658M, 16,089 faculty and staff, 337,270 alumni, this is Canada’s second largest university.

In this key Senior Management Team position, you will report to the President of UBC and oversee the external relations portfolio including communications and marketing, government relations, community engagement, UBC’s Learning Exchange, Campus Events, Campus and Community Planning, Public Affairs and UBC’s downtown presence.  As a measure of your strategic importance to the University, you will also act as a trusted advisor to the Board of Governors.

Working with your Associate Vice Presidents and Directors, you will see the big picture and ensure that all of your groups are aligned with the University’s new strategic plan, Shaping UBC’s Next Century.  All of the elements of your portfolio will benefit from your collaborative approach to partnership, especially relationships with Federal, Provincial, Municipal and First Nations governments.  You will bring practiced expertise to issues management, planning, budgeting and policy development.

In addition to an advanced university degree, you have managed a multi-faceted, multi-stakeholder communications portfolio with energy and purpose.  Adept at government relations and communications, you may have had additional experience with media and marketing.  With UBC, you will radiate passion for the learning and research mission of the university.
