Media relations representative
The Johns Hopkins University seeks an effective writer and communicator to report and write stories about the university and successfully pitch those stories to journalists, resulting in placements in high-profile traditional and new media outlets both domestically and internationally.
The media relations representative promotes understanding and appreciation of the university by developing engaging stories about the university and about faculty and students in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering, other schools and divisions, and, where appropriate, across divisions or throughout the university.
The media relations representative will cultivate strong working relationships with reporters, editors, producers and hosts in print, broadcast and online newsrooms. Similarly, the media relations representative will develop strong working relationships with faculty members, staff members and students of the university and with colleagues in the Office of Communications and in other Johns Hopkins communications offices.
The media relations representative will also perform other duties as assigned in furtherance of the mission of the Office of Communications.
- Find and report compelling stories about the work of the university and the activities of its students, faculty and staff.
- Shape those stories in an engaging and appropriate manner into pitches, news releases, media advisories, expert lists, Q&A interviews, and other content.
- Collaborate with colleagues as appropriate to create accompanying multimedia packages including video, audio, still images, infographics.
- Effectively pitch stories and multimedia packages to secure placements in traditional and new media, with emphasis on high-impact national and international news media.
- Develop and maintain productive working relationships with key journalists and with on-campus story sources and collaborators.
- Contribute to university-owned news channels such as the Hub and further promote stories to the news media through social media.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds.
- B.A. degree in relevant discipline.
- Two or more years of related experience in journalism, media relations, or communications.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and/or education, to the extent permitted by the Johns Hopkins University equivalency formula.
Additionally, the following skills are preferable:
- Facility with A.P. style.
- Ability to work with web content management systems, particularly Drupal and/or WordPress.
- Ability to communicate effectively in social media.
- Ability to art direct or collaborate in acquisition of multimedia content to accompany stories.
- Ability to work in complex web systems such as news media databases or digital asset management systems.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
