The University of Manchester I3 Ltd (UMI3) is a wholly-owned company of The University of Manchester and its agent for Intellectual Property (IP) management and commercialisation. UMIP is the division of UMI3 whose role is to commercialise intellectual property (IP), know-how and technology developed at the University. Since its inception in 2004, UMI3 has created over 40 spin-out companies, managed over £400m of third-party investment into the University’s spin-outs and brokered over 7,500 licences and assignments. UMI3 is widely recognised as being amongst the leading university technology transfer organisations in the UK.
The Commercialisation Executive role is part of a specialist operational team (New Projects Team) responsible for working with enterprising researchers to turn new ideas into live commercial projects resulting in new spin-out companies and licence deals. You will initiate, receive and carry out an evaluation of invention disclosures for novelty and commercial potential, manage the protection of intellectual property if appropriate, conduct initial market research, and gain an understanding of the commercial opportunity and route to market.
Candidates will have a background in one or more areas of; physical sciences, engineering, or business/management subject area, including computer science, software, electronic engineering, materials science electronics, or software. PhD or equivalent or a postgraduate business qualification would be an advantage for this role. Candidates will also have a strong interest in intellectual property and technology commercialisation. Experience gained in a technology transfer or commercial environment is essential. You will have good organisation and analytical skills, be an excellent communicator and be comfortable working pro-actively and flexible in a stimulating and varied working environment.
