General summary/purpose:

The Johns Hopkins Center for Technology in Education (CTE) is a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth, particularly those with special needs, through teaching, research, and leadership in the use of technology. To help carry out this mission, CTE develops a variety of technology-supported learning solutions including instructional modules, learning communities, toolkits, web applications, mobile apps, online professional development, and large data systems that support the work of students, teachers, educational leaders, and policy makers.

The Instructional Designer will provide instructional design/technology to support the expansion and operation of our online and blended programs. This position will provide instructional design, development, and evaluation services to faculty, staff, and external partners for a variety of initiatives for continuing education credit as well as for noncredit, informal learning experiences. The candidate will find creative ways to make learning experiences and assessments more efficient, effective, and engaging to meet the needs of learners with a wide range of knowledge and experience.  The candidate will provide guidance and individual training to Center faculty and staff who serve as subject matter experts and professional development roles to support content development and build capacity in use of innovative technology tools and instructional templates. The candidate will contribute expertise to the team and Center in areas related to learning strategies, instructional technology, and meeting learning outcomes.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

Online Course Coordination

  • Support the development of learning solutions for project audiences, including modules, assessments, and learning objects for formal and informal instruction for key education stakeholders in the field.
  • Continually improve and maintain existing web-based learning resources through design, evaluation, and revisions/enhancements. 
  • Support the offering of ADA, Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 compliant content for online learning assets (i.e., ensure all videos, content, and graphics are properly developed with ADA and Section 508 guidelines).
  • Collaborate with the frontend development team, visual designer, and instructional technologist to build innovative learning experiences. 
  • Implement quality assurance processes to ensure that the online experiences are functional and error free.
  • Coordinate access and deployment activities with various Center teams to ensure that the learning experiences meet project goals, scope, and timeline.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data on the program progress, challenges, and areas for improvement.

Training and Development

  • Support the instructional design/development and technology processes of the Center and Learning, Engagement, and Design Team’s programs that will promote learning technologies and strategies.
  • Support and implement creative solutions for instructional design and development processes for individual projects.
  • Contribute to staff development opportunities that will promote teaching, learning, and assessment in areas related to learning strategies, instructional technology, and learning outcomes.
  • Conduct individual training and coaching for Center faculty and staff to meet instructional design and development learning opportunities and needs.

Instructional Design and Development

  • Assist with writing, copy editing, and scripting for online learning solutions.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts across the Center in the design, development, and delivery of online courses.
  • Provide instructional design, development and evaluation services for the Center’s online learning experiences in collaboration with the project team.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree required in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field.
  • Minimum of three years progressively responsible experience developing technology-based learning projects and programs.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in instructional design, instructional technology or related field preferred.
  • Four or more years of progressively responsible experience developing technology-based learning projects and programs.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities: 

  • Experience in the practical application of instructional design theory.
  • Skilled in all instructional design processes: needs assessments, design, development, teaching, implementation, and evaluation/assessment, including developing rubrics.
  • Expertise in e-learning authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline.
  • Expertise in web conferencing tools (e.g., Adobe Connect) and learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard).
  • Expertise in website development tools such as Wordpress.
  • Knowledge of social media tools and their application in teaching, learning, and research.
  • Skilled in content editing and scripting for video production.
  • Knowledge of multimedia authoring software and project management tools.
  • Knowledge of lecture and screen capture tools such as Camtasia, Adobe Presenter, etc.
  • Knowledge of basic HTML.
  • Ability to research new technology tools beneficial to promoting engaged learning and teaching.
  • Ability to collect data, analyze data, create reports, and prepare written communication with an attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a varied constituency including faculty, staff, students, and industry representatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and highly organized.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of MS Office Suite software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for corresponding, analysis, information storage, and presentation.
  • Knowledge of graphic design software is preferred.
  • Technical qualifications or specialized certifications.
  • Quality Matters (QM) or Online Learning Consortium (OLC) certification is preferred.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
