General summary/purpose:

Instructional Therapist needed to work with an adult with autism on a casual basis.  Individual will implement vocational, communication, and academic curricula in both educational, community, and home settings.  Individual must provide constant supervision to the client while maintaining the highest level of safety.  The ideal candidate has some experience working with non-verbal adult learners with autism in home programs, private school and community settings and has a flexible schedule.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 instruction to a person with autism
  • Create and maintain educational materials
  • Fulfill all pre- and post-session responsibilities
  • Provide in-home habilitation services that include but are not limited to overseeing the client's daily routines, assisting with personal hygiene, and preparing small meals
  • Provide assistance in outdoors recreation activities as dictated by the client’s schedule, including out-of-state travel, if required
  • Maintain a log of all sessions
  • Carry out and monitor treatment plans and/or procedures specific to the client

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Special Education, or related discipline required - A minimum of three years of closely related experience may substitute for specialized degree.
  • Some experience with non-verbal adult learners with autism required
  • Knowledge of a variety of instructional strategies required
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license with good driving record
  • Candidate must pass reference and background check
  • Position responsibilities include maximum flexibility in schedule/availability

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Psychology, Special Education, or related discipline
  • Complete CPR and First Aid training preferred

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Some experience with non-verbal adult learners with autism required

Any specific physical requirements for the job:

  • Ability to perform aerobic exercises without difficulty, such as running, skiing. Ability to lift weights up to 75 lbs.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
