The Research Specialist II will work in a laboratory studying stem cell biology and engineering. The research group is pioneering research in human cell reprogramming from blood cells, correcting and creating mutations by gene targeting in human stem cells, generating transplantable hematopoietic stem cells from human iPS cells, and generating red blood cells.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Under initial supervision of the faculty investigator and lab research personnel, the Research Specialist II performs tissue culture and molecular biology experiments. The Research Specialist II will have independent projects and may be included as a co-author of publications resulting from his or her work in the laboratory. Specific techniques used include cell and tissue culture, PCR, DNA extraction and analysis, gel electrophoresis, flow cytometry and immunostaining. This position will involve animal work (mice), therefore comfort with animal models is a must. Applicants must be familiar with the operation of basic laboratory equipment and with sterile technique. In consultation with a supervisor, an experienced Specialist will perform, evaluate and troubleshoot methods as necessary, prepare solutions and reagents following standard procedures and keep an organized lab notebook. Meet at least weekly with principal investigator to report on research and laboratory status. This position is a great opportunity to develop scientific investigation skills and become trained in broadly applicable laboratory techniques. Successfully work both independently and collaboratively as part of a group/team. Teach new lab members how to perform techniques. Be flexible regarding switching projects when need be. Monitor and inventory supplies. Place supply orders online or by phone, as well as discuss ordering and pricing with sales representatives.
Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field.
- Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
- Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience.
JHU Equivalency Formula:
- 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
