The Department of Pediatrics seeks a Clinical Associate (Neonatologist).   The casual clinical neonatologist is sought to join Frederick Memorial Neonatal Associates, PLLC (a subsidiary corporation of Johns Hopkins University {JHU}). The neonatology group includes neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners who are based at Frederick Memorial Hospital (FMH) but are dually credentialed both at JHU and at FMH.

Primary Duties:

Neonatologist will work as needed in hospital and attend high risk deliveries, provide prenatal and postnatal consultations as requested and render care to neonates in a Level III NICU with ~350 admissions/year.  

The on-service neonatologist will make multidisciplinary and discharge planning rounds in the NICU.   Neonatologist will guide nursing staff and ancillary personnel in providing neonatal care. Neonatologist will communicate with parent(s) and other health care professionals regarding plans of care for neonates in the NICU. When not on-service, neonatologist will be expected to do in hospital night duty Neonatologist will be share the emergency backup calls with the neonatal nurse practitioner and the other neonatologists. 

Neonatologist will participate in quality improvement efforts and participate in committee work or staff meetings as requested. Neonatologist will help to keep up the Vermont Oxford Database registry.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.D. Degree or D.O. Degree. Completion of approved residency training program in Pediatrics.
  • Successful completion of approved fellowship training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. 
  • Board certification in General Pediatrics.  Board Eligible / Board Certified in Neonatal Perinatal Sub-board. Licensure by State of Maryland Board of Physicians. 
  • DEA Certification and Sate of Maryland Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) Certification.   
  • Credentialed at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Frederick Memorial Hospital and related hospitals as necessary prior to start date.

Additional Certification and Experience:  

  • Neonatal resuscitation—NRP certification. 
  • Related work experience. 
  • Recent work within the past year as a neonatologist or a neonatology fellow.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge and skill in neonatal resuscitation/stabilization/maintenance.
  • Knowledge of parenteral nutrition administration.
  • Skill in use of respirators and respiratory assist devices, umbilical catheter placement, thoracentesis and chest tube placement, lumbar puncture, PICC line placement.
  • Knowledge and skill in interpretation of neonatal x-ray studies.

Machines and/or Equipment:

Computers (use of Meditech and Centricity databases, PACS system for radiology imaging, PPN200 for parenteral nutrition and premixed medications orders) Respirators (conventional and high frequency), nasal CPAP and SiPAP.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Sitting, standing and walking for extended period.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. 
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). 
  • Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
