General summary/purpose:

Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible for performing experiments on animal or human fluids and/or tissue or cultured cell lines. The candidate will also independently design and carry out experiments, interpret results, contribute to the planning and writing of any relevant publications.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include: q/PCR, Western blot, histochemistry/microscopy experiments.
  • Performs PCR genotyping and breeding of mice to maintain and expand mouse colonies for laboratory experiments on immune cell function.
  • Works with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and other personnel to maintain, expand mouse lines and generate new mutant mouse lines.
  • Assists with maintenance of mouse colony and participates in characterizing the molecular, cellular phenotypes of mice in the mouse model of allergic lung inflammation.
  • Individual will manage mouse databases, weaning, tagging, sample collection, and PCR genotyping.
  • May be involved with recruitment and screening of Study Participants for IRB-approved blood draw protocol. Individual will isolate immune cells from human blood, culture cells and analyze cells by FACS.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies including lab consumables, glassware, and animals in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field. 1 year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.

Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred qualifications:

Master’s degree preferred.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience in mouse breeding and/or animal husbandry preferred.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills are essential for working within our laboratory group.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
