Center Brief

The Center for American Indian Health (CAIH) is located administratively within International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The core activities housed at CAIH include research and service programs focused on reducing infectious diseases and behavioral and mental health problems, and promoting education and wellness.

General Summary/Purpose

  • The goals of the behavioral and mental health prevention projects are to co-design and/or implement culturally relevant interventions and evaluate the impact on improving health and sometimes educational outcomes for Native American children, families and communities. 
  • The overall goal of the Iiná ’Ayoo’oo’ni’: Embrace Life Project is to prevent suicide in communities within the Chinle Service Unit by implementing the Zero Suicide model. The project will utilize the increased resources made available through the Zero Suicide Initiative to create a system of seamless care for patients at risk for suicide that is culturally based and sustainable over the course of three years.  The first year will focus on developing improved understanding of the Navajo traditional teachings that can inform the development of a system of care that effectively meets the needs of our communities and developing an effective and reliable suicide surveillance system. The aim is to, by the end of the first year, utilize the understanding gained from the cultural perspective on suicide to develop a complete project implementation plan, conduct staff training, test culturally informed approaches to screening and assessment, patient engagement, interventions, and care management, and implement a suicide surveillance system.
  • The focus of this position is to implement a suicide surveillance and case management system to help identify and refer individuals at risk for suicide to appropriate services (with a focus on youth ages 10 to 24 years old), and to track and report trends and patterns to the Service Unit, as well as other health and tribal officials. The Research Program Assistant II will work collaboratively with a number of key stakeholders including the Navajo Department of Behavioral Health Services, Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President, Navajo National Tribal Epidemiology Center, advisory boards/councils throughout the Navajo Nation, and local Johns Hopkins staff.
  • The Research Program Assistant II (Case Manager) is based in Chinle, Arizona and will report to the Senior Research Program Coordinator II. The Research Program Assistant II will support the Chinle Service Unit’s participation in the larger Zero Suicide grant program and continuously report on the progress toward goals and objectives of the grant to the grantee (Chinle Service Unit) and all community stakeholders.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Serve as a Research Program Assistant II (Case Manager) for behavioral health projects in Chinle:

Activities include:

  1. Help to build, maintain and utilize a web-based surveillance system following study protocol
  2. Provide follow-up services (e.g., monitor suicide risk and triage to services) to individuals in the Chinle Area as outlined in the study protocol
  3. Establish and maintain partnerships with local organizations and community members (including, but not limited to, hospitals, schools, government agencies and officials)
  4. Establish and communicate regularly with a Community Advisory Board (CAB) to guide intervention and study development
  5. Liaise, plan and attend meetings, and carry out relevant activities with key stakeholders
  6. Conduct interviews with youth, caregivers, program providers, community members, tribal leaders and other participants about Zero Suicide key activities
  7. Report findings to Chinle Service Unit, Navajo Nation, Agency, and Chapter leadership and work with them to interpret findings in the context of future suicide prevention interventions
  8. Help provide annual reports of surveillance data to key Navajo Nation leadership and stakeholders
  9. Help disseminate tribally approved findings through annual reports, at national conferences and in the scientific literature

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED (required). 
  • Two years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

* JHU Equivalency Formula30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Fluent speaker of Diné bizaad.

  • Ability to travel as needed, including overnight trips for extended periods of time. 
  • Valid driver’s license issued by the state of residence with a good driving record.
  • Some flexibility is required to ensure that evening and weekend work is completed for some projects.
  • This position will maintain background clearance as required by the employer and any collaborating agencies.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
