Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART)-Center for Environmental Sensing and Modeling (CENSAM), to conduct research in the monitoring of urban infrastructure as part of an overall research project aimed at demonstrating the benefits of wireless sensor networks in monitoring and controlling urban infrastructures. Will be responsible for the design and development of the sensor nodes and system integration for wireless sensing of underground urban construction projects.

The main focus of CENSAM’s first phase--done in close collaboration with Singapore’s Public Utilities Board (PUB)--has been on applications for water distribution systems (http://cee.mit.edu/system/files/SHMII-v6.pdf). The second phase aims to leverage this experience for other important infrastructure applications, notably monitoring structural health for temporary excavation support systems for underground construction projects.

The project, based at the SMART Center in Singapore with extended visits to MIT, is under the direction of Professor Andrew Whittle (http://cee.mit.edu/whittle).

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: a Ph.D. in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering or related field; strong computer programming skills; proven expertise in wireless sensor networks; familiarity with applications in structural health monitoring and/or experience in sensor packaging; a good publication record in reputable journals or conferences; and ability to work both independently and in team settings. Seek self-motivated individual who demonstrates resourcefulness, productivity, and innovation.

In addition to applying online here, a full CV/resume, cover letter, and list of three references and their contact information should be sent to Professor Andrew Whittle at ajwhittl@mit.edu.
