Not only is this a chance to join a great, modern university in a great, global city – one with a huge international industrial and engineering reputation – but also the perfect time to step into this transformational role. You will help to shape and deliver our ambitious vision for engineering education, research, and knowledge exchange.

If you have a proven record of academic leadership and you share our drive to explore, create, invent, re-invent and make the world take notice, this could be a career-defining move.

The challenge

As well as playing a leading role in shaping and delivering our vision for our engineering offering, you will also provide academic leadership to a vibrant School of Engineering. You will spearhead plans to grow the Department significantly over the next five years, building on current expertise in smart power management, sports engineering, bioengineering, communications and sensing technologies and computational systems modelling.

Much will hinge on your ability to lead and inspire staff through a period of change, by setting a positive example personally and working closely with the Faculty PVC to define a strategy that delivers a stimulating environment for staff and students alike.

This is a rotational role; after four years, we will review your progress and you will either continue leading the department forward or revert to a professorial role. If your ambition matches ours, we expect it will be the former.

About you

First and foremost, we are looking for candidates with an exemplary record of accomplishment in leadership in learning and teaching – people who can demonstrate excellence in research and enterprise and can readily contribute to the University’s increasing international networks.

Proven negotiation and relationship-building skills are vital. As well as fostering firm relationships with internal influencers and with your team, you will be working closely with high-profile stakeholders.

We will be looking for evidence that you can manage and enable change, develop people, and confidently control budgets.

Academically, you have an exemplary international research profile, with the know-how to ensure high-quality research and attract funding. You have proven you can provide academic leadership to ensure quality research assessment and inspiring, relevant programme development with cutting-edge innovation in teaching and learning.
