The Institute of Thin Films, Sensors & Imaging within the School of Engineering & Computing at UWS is well established and an internationally recognised research institute.
An exciting opportunity for a materials/plasma scientist has become available to work full time on a 24-month Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). The aim of the project is to develop a new and novel vacuum-based deposition technology to provide additional functional benefits to existing process technologies at Novosound Ltd (Newhouse, Lanarkshire) for incorporation into its ultrasonic transducer product portfolio.
The successful candidate will get the opportunity to register free of charge for a Higher Degree (Masters or Ph.D.), receive training in Chartered Management Institute (level 5), work with senior company management to realise benefits to the business and apply their degree and lead their own project in a business environment.
Novosound Ltd specialises in the design and manufacture of thin film-on flexible substrate based ultrasonic transducer products for various applications. Applications include non-destructive testing, medical, dental and veterinary. Novosound Ltd primarily utilises physical vapour deposition for the manufacturing of piezoelectric devices and are looking to increase the quality and yield of the coatings.

While you will be recruited by the University and work to their terms and conditions of your employment, your role will be based at the company.
The successful candidate must possess:
Minimum BSc in physics/engineer/materials-related subject.
- Knowledge and/or experience are required in some of the following:
- Surface analysis and characterisation techniques, such as SEM, TEM, AFM, piezoelectric thin film measurements & analysis.
- Ultrasonic imaging and measurement experience.
- Knowledge of research methods and project management.
- Familiarity with physical vapour deposition processes.
Essential skills we require as a minimum:
- Organisational skills with the ability to plan under own initiative and to work to deadlines
- Good communication and interpersonal skills including report writing
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues and sharing expertise.
- Strong analytical and numerical skills
- Ability to understand and process data
