About the opportunity
The Chair of Melanoma Surgical Oncology is a leadership position within the Discipline of Surgery at The University of Sydney. In late 2018 the current Chair, Professor John Thompson AO will be vacating the chair after an illustrious career in Melanoma Surgery. The incoming Chair will be well placed to make seminal contributions across all dimensions of melanoma surgical oncology activities (research, clinical care of patients with melanoma, and education) and will interact with major stakeholders and affiliates, particularly The University of Sydney’s Sydney Medical School, Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA), and the Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH). The Chair will also be expected to pursue academic research of national and international significance, contribute to one of the world’s largest Melanoma and Merkel Cell biospecimen banks, make use of the extensive curated existing databases of clinical, pathological and outcome data held by the MIA, and expand the research activities investigating surgical aspects of treatment.
The Chair will teach at all relevant levels within the Discipline of Surgery and within educational programs conducted by MIA and the SLHD. The Chair will have a role in the RPAH Institute of Academic Surgery in conjunction with other staff of the Department of Melanoma and Surgical Oncology at RPAH. Higher degree student supervision is expected to be through the University’s Central Clinical School and Sydney Medical School. The Chair will be expected to play a role in MIA educational activities through provision of compelling and accurate content and effective and inspiring supervision and mentoring of Fellows and PhD students.
Term and remuneration
The successful applicant will be offered a full-time fixed term position for a period of up to 5 years, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation and confirmation period for new appointees. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package.
