Macquarie is a university engaged with the real and often complex problems and opportunities that define our lives.

Since our foundation 54 years ago, we have aspired to be a different type of university: one unbound by ivory towers and sandstone walls. Rather, we are focused on fostering collaboration between students, academics, industry and society, encouraging all to traverse the boundaries of their own perspective and affect change.

Over the years, we’ve grown to become the centre of a vibrant local and global community. A place of constant stimulus and human interaction.

Together, we advance world-class theoretical thinking and translate it into real-world solutions. We’re connecting people across the most diverse fields of knowledge to create bold new possibilities: for their careers, intellectual endeavours, enterprises and the common good.

At Macquarie, people become skilled at switching between specialist and generalist mindsets; mastering complexity, thinking holistically and helping to create a better future.

About the Department of Computing

The Department of Computing is committed to excellence in terms of its teaching, research, and industry and external collaborations. Being located at the northern end of Sydney’s ‘Silicon Valley’, the Department enjoys the advantages of a large green field campus in the hub of Sydney’s IT industry.

The Department of Computing aims to elevate the international standing of scientific and technological research that is already well established at Macquarie University. For more information about the department please visit www.comp.mq.edu.au/

About the Centre for Advanced Computing: Algorithm and Cryptography

Our vision is to be the leading centre in Australasia for research into algorithms, complexity and cryptography applied to advanced computing systems. we have determined a mission to develop algorithms and cryptographic methods and protocols for applications to advanced information and computation systems.

The Role

We are seeking one Postdoctoral Fellow to join a team of talented world-renowned researchers to work on different aspects of Distributed Algorithms in Dynamic Networks from the development of theoretical framework with the exploitation of locally available information, to the design, analysis and implementation of real-life solutions and datasets. The outcome of this research project will have both research and development applications.

The post will be funded from an Australian Research Council Discovery Project Grant awarded to Professor Bernard Mans (http://web.science.mq.edu.au/~bmans/).

The Successful Candidate

The successful candidates will be involved in a Research project on local computation in Dynamic networks, mobile, wireless, social and other ubiquitous communication networks that involve autonomous and highly dynamic entities. Disappointingly, dynamic aspects of the networks are often treated as a liability instead of an asset, even when they enhance the network. It has become clear that crucial local knowledge available within the neighbourhood of the entities can play a significant role in the efficiency of the network. The goal of this fundamental research project is to provide ground-breaking solutions to design efficient dynamic networks by exploiting this local information: what type of knowledge available locally to the dynamic entities would affect the computability or the communication complexity of solving a problem? And more importantly how and why?
