An opportunity exists for a suitably qualified candidate to join the satellite communications research group at Surrey to work on the system design aspects of High Throughput Satellite systems. The position is funded by industry and will be done in close collaboration with them.

The research group is based within The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS), the home for the 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) at the University of Surrey, is the world's first research institute dedicated to the next generation of mobile network technology and has attracted over £80M of support to date. The 5GIC has unparalleled expertise in system research, covering all layers of the network. It also benefits from excellent research infrastructure, including a large-scale outdoor mobile test-bed, which is one of only a handful of such facilities worldwide. The 5GIC is an international hub for telecommunication research and innovation. It works in close partnership with a consortium of over 50 industry members including key ICT service providers, network and device manufacturers and test equipment solution providers to develop innovative solutions and standards for 5G networks.

We wish to extend our work on 5G to now include satellites and the successful RA will work alongside others in the 5GIC and be involved in other projects such as the EU funded SaT5G project and other associated ESA work. We are looking for someone with some background or experience in satellite communications but with a knowledge of mobile systems. The work will be systems based and so an all round knowledge is desirable.

Applicants should have a PhD in an associated field and preference will be given to those with proven research experience. Applicants are expected to have a track record of publications, good problem solving and analytical skills, to be proactive, to engage with other researchers and to be self-motivated.
