ICS is one of four major research institute/centres within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. It is housed within its own purpose built modern building which also includes the 5G Innovation Centre and one of the world’s first 5G test bed networks with 46 small cells around the campus and a 5G virtualised core network. 5GIC has attracted over £90m funding from government and industry and includes 26 industrial partners. Current projects are aimed to build satellites into this network and to demonstrate this in the next few years.

Surrey has an International reputation in Satellites and Communications and is recognised as having a unique position in satellites in UK academia. The successful candidate will be required to teach two MSc courses involving satellites and a major one week training course for industry as well as contributing to the IET vacation course in satellite communications. Many alumni are now in key positions in the satellite industry. In research it has participated in a large number of the major EU and ESA satellite projects over the last twenty years and currently has contracts with EU and International companies. It is now at the forefront of research into satellites in 5G.

Satellite communications research currently covers all aspects from the physical layer via networking and security aspects to applications, and of course 5G. We are looking for an exceptional candidate who will cover the systems and physical aspects of the area and complement existing networking expertise. There are opportunities to link with other ICS researchers across the field of 5G.

This full time and permanent position provides an exciting opportunity to join an established research environment with excellent links into international industry. The post includes both teaching and research.

Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant subject area and a track record of research publications. Previous involvement in major research projects would be seen as an advantage. The appointed candidate will be expected to contribute to all aspects of the Department’s activities including developing links with industry, teaching, administration and research activity.
