The University of New Brunswick (UNB) is the flagship university of Canada’s only officially bilingual province, a Maritime province known for its quality of life and friendly, welcoming people. It is the oldest English-language university in Canada and one of the oldest public universities in North America. Located on two campuses (Fredericton and Saint John), UNB is currently home to 6,200 undergraduate and graduate students on the Fredericton campus and 2,200 on the Saint John campus. Each campus has its own academic Senate, providing opportunity for a balance of independence and collaboration between the campuses. The campuses and a number of the local communities they serve sit on traditional Wolastoqey, Mi’Kmaq and Passamaquoddy territories.

The President is responsible for identifying and achieving UNB’s academic and community service goals, and in representing the University to stakeholders, supporters, government, the private sector and outside communities. A strong advocate for the value of higher education in society generally, and particularly in the province of New Brunswick, the President promotes and encourages excellence in all aspects of the University’s mission, while addressing and proposing solutions to the issues and challenges that it faces.
Opportunities and Priorities
The next President will lead the University’s ongoing efforts to develop and strengthen its academic programs and its research profile while providing students with a uniquely attractive environment for life and learning, notably by completing and implementing the University’s next strategic plan. As spokesperson and advocate for the University and higher education in general, the President will work to secure the financial resources that will enable the University to meet its academic goals while developing an increased sense of institutional pride and a climate of mutual trust and respect among all members of the University community. The President will continue to cultivate the University’s international outreach and shape the institution’s focus in all areas.
You are a person with proven leadership skills and experience within complex organizations, a team builder and motivator who is at ease in a context where consultation and collegiality are essential ingredients to the successful implementation of ambitious goals. Committed to the importance of higher education for the future of our society and knowledgeable about the opportunities and challenges facing publicly-funded universities today, you embrace innovation and change. You are an excellent and inspiring communicator with the ability to represent and advocate for UNB with both internal and external stakeholders. You will instill commitment and enthusiasm in furthering UNB’s most ambitious aspirations, developing beneficial partnerships and promoting success in all of UNB’s academic and community endeavours.

The Joint Nominating Committee will begin considering candidates in September 2018 and will continue its work until a final recommendation is made to the Joint Meeting of the Board of Governors and the two campus Senates. The appointment is made by the Government of New Brunswick on the recommendation of the Joint Meeting.
