The Boston University College of Communication invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Emerging Media Studies with an appointment in the Department of Film & Television. This position addresses social scientific aspects of new media with expertise in empirical approaches to topics such as virtual reality, augmented reality, digital production and its implications for the FTV industry, digital games, new distribution channels (including mobiles and online streaming), and novel business models. Familiarity with statistics is expected sufficient to teach and guide interested MA and doctoral students. This position is unique in that the successful candidate will be able to teach classes for students working with social scientific theories and methodologies and also classes that will be of interest to those preparing for careers in the field of film and television studies and/or production. Therefore, candidates should be able to make their area(s) of expertise relatable to students of film, television, and emerging media. This position is pending budgetary approval.

The College of Communication is home to interdisciplinary research and applications. The Division of Emerging Media Studies interacts with the three departments within the College: Film & Television, Journalism, and Mass Communication/Advertising/Public Relations.

Teaching mainly in the cross-cutting Division of Emerging Media Studies, the candidate hired for this position will be appointed in the Department of Film & Television and will also be offering instruction in that unit. Responsibilities include but are not limited to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in mediated communication theory and research; supervising master’s theses and doctoral dissertations; and broadening the research profile of the Division of Emerging Media Studies and the Department of Film & Television.

Required Skills

Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in Communication or a related field. Advanced ABDs will also be considered. Experience teaching at the university level, and a record of scholarly publications, or a demonstrated potential to achieve such a record, are expected.
