Job Description

Boston University’s case management philosophy is one of support and education for Boston University Faculty and Staff. Injuries at work are a complex, emotional process. This case manager will fill a dynamic role and have the opportunity to promote wellness and optimize workforce readiness.

In this newly created position at BU, the case manager will follow a process of coordinating comprehensive health care services, following illness or injury, to achieve optimum quality care delivered in a cost effective manner. This case management process integrates assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation components. This individual will work in coordination with key stakeholders at Boston University in support of the diverse workforce we serve.

Key Responsibilities:

OHN-CM functions as the occupational health point of contact, responsible for collecting the required data/documentation regarding work related incidents and claims, coordinating care for the injured/ill employee, communicating updates to HRSC, the employee, employee’s manager, HR Business Partner and EH&S (when indicated) and third party administrator, which includes:

  • Intake, review and triage all work reported/related injury/illness cases.
  • Obtain and forward incident report to Human Resources Service Center (HRSC) and Third Party Administrator (TPA).
  • Coordinate/delegate incident investigation with Environmental Health and Safety, TPA, and HRSC.
  • Triage cases/claims process:
  • Identify appropriate treating provider internal to BUOHC.
  • Initiate contact with external treating providers.
  • Ensure employees are receiving quality health care by knowledgeable and experienced health professionals.
  • Determination of employee’s work capacity status via consultation with treating providers and BUOHC clinicians.
  • Identify medical /claim indicators for 2nd opinion or IME’s.
  • Identify timely actions and interventions ensuring optimal case resolution.
  • Consultation and coordination with treating providers to determine employee’s medical status and work capacity.
  • Conduct ongoing and routine review, management and updates of all active claims, to prevent lapses or delays in treatment and to obtain updates on employee work status.
  • Ensure employees are provided information and education on the Workers’ Compensation program and process
  • This individual will also help contribute towards risk assessment and corrective measures to reduce workplace injuries.
  • Reviews, and makes determinations on, medical certifications for the broader centralized leave administration process in the HR Service Center (specifically for FMLA, short term disability, and personal medical leaves of absence).

Skills and qualifications:

  • The Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) is a registered professional nurse with significant clinical skills, who has acquired through professional experience and additional education, knowledge in toxicology, industrial hygiene and safety regulations
  • Clinical skills to access and identify potential health problems, set a plan of action, recognize and initiate treatment of occupational injuries and non-occupational injuries and illnesses, and to identify and prevent the more insidious health effects, possible produced by long-term chronic exposure to toxic chemicals, ergonomic factors and harmful physical agents including noise, asbestos, and chemical agents encountered in the workplace.
  • Knowledge of and focus on primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention and health promotion strategies to minimize accidents and illnesses.
  • Education and experience with case management strategies.
  • Skills in facilitating effective communication between employers and injured or ill employees and key stakeholders.
  • The OHN-CM will have a knowledge and understanding of both the leave and accommodation processes, in order to coordinate and refer injured employees to the respective departments, (HRSC and EOO). This will prevent lapses or delays in communication and coordination of benefits and ensure review of ADA accommodation requests.

Required Skills

  • Required Education: Bachelors in Nursing (BSN)
  • Preferred Education: Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN-S) or Certified Occupational Health Nurse Case Manager (COHN-CM).
  • Required Experience: 5-7 years of experience as an RN.
  • Preferred Experience: 5-7 years of experience as an RN in an ambulatory, urgent care, or emergency care setting.
  • Also requires: active Massachusetts RN license, up to date immunizations, and is contingent upon the successful completion of a CORI/SORI background check.
