The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation is the largest private financier of research in Sweden. The Foundation’s aim is to benefit Sweden by supporting Swedish basic research and education, mainly in medicine, technology, and the natural sciences. The Wallenberg Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest ever individual research program, and provides unique opportunities for achieving international research excellence with industrial relevance.

The scope of WASP is artificial intelligence, collaborating vehicles, robots and complex software-intensive systems with the intelligence to achieve autonomy in interactions with humans. Software, models and algorithms are currently a large and rapidly increasing part of the development of almost all engineering systems including autonomous systems, and there is a strong need to manage this complexity to ensure functionality and reduce development costs. Artificial intelligence and autonomous systems are a scientifically challenging and disruptive technology that will fundamentally change society and industry. Swedish industry is by tradition strong in systems engineering. To stay competitive, Sweden needs to invest in research and competence building in this area, and hence WASP is highly relevant to Swedish industry.

WASP is now seeking to appoint a Full Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The successful appointee will be a world-class researcher in their field, with a demonstrable track record of highly cited publications in top peer-reviewed journals and conferences, and a successful track record in securing external research funds, (relative to current academic rank). S/he will also have the vision and drive to further develop and strengthen Sweden’s reputation in this field of research. The appointment will be made in close collaborations with one of the partner universities: Chalmers University of Technology; KTH Royal Institute of Technology; Linköping University; Lund University; and Umeå University.

An executive search exercise is being undertaken by Perrett Laver to assist the recruitment committee.
