Liverpool John Moores University owns and operates a 2.0-m robotic telescope (“The Liverpool Telescope”) on La Palma in the Canary Islands. Working with international partners, we now intend to build a 4.0m class robotic telescope on the same site. We seek a mechanical engineer to participate in the conceptual and detailed design of the telescope, enclosure and instrumentation. This will include evaluation of predicted system performance including flexure and thermal properties under static and dynamic loads. You will work collaboratively with engineers in the same and other disciplines both within LJMU and at external partners and supplier organisations to ensure both individual system and system-wide performance and quality. The position is fixed term for 2 years in the first instance and is based in Liverpool, UK.
