Lancaster University has a substantial and longstanding presence in China, which is strategically important to the University and also an area of our activities that we are going to further develop. We have established a Lancaster University China Centre to help coordinate and facilitate our current and future research agendas vis-à-vis China. Our existing partnerships and presence in China include our Joint Institute with Beijing Jiaotong University (at the Weihai campus) and the Confucius Institute (CI) at Lancaster.

Lancaster University Confucius Institute is already very successful and, in recognition of this success, the University has recently received substantial financial support from Hanban in Beijing to create a bespoke facility for the Confucius Institute, which will allow the University to expand its activities. The CI is a key part of our strategy with respect to China, which is built on strong educational foundations, through the study and research of Chinese language and culture, which are crucial if the University and the UK are to better engage with China. The vision for our CI is to achieve model CI status, and this will be a substantial part of the Director’s role. You will also contribute to the development of the CI at Lancaster and to the enhancement of Lancaster University’s profile and reputation in China.

We are seeking to appoint a talented individual to lead the development of the CI. You will be a scholar with a proven research track record, possibly with research interests which includes a China focus. You will also have a track record as an academic leader who can provide strategic direction for the CI.

You must have good knowledge of Chinese culture and history, and ability to speak fluently in Mandarin Chinese.
