Postdoctoral Fellowship/Researcher in Learning Technologies to Support STEM Education
The Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (http://www.ntnu.edu/ie) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for one postdoctoral fellow position within learning technologies to support STEM education at the Department of Computer Science (IDI) (http://www.ntnu.edu/idi).
An appointment as postdoctoral fellow is for a term of two years of full-time research, with a possibility for an extension to a third year. The position of postdoctoral fellow is a fixed-term position with the primary objective of qualifying for work in top academic posts.
Information about the department
The Department of Computer Science currently employs 30 full time professors, 60 associate/assistant professors, 19 adjunct professors, 37 postdocs/researchers, 90 PhD students, and 20 technical/administrative staff. The department holds a wide portfolio of highly competitive projects in the area of learning technologies and innovative education (https://www.ntnu.edu/idi/research/) and has recently been awarded with the nationwide status of Centre for Excellence in Information Technology Education.
The position is part of the H2020 project “Learning science the fun and creative way: coding, making, and play as vehicles for informal science learning in the 21st century” (CoM_n_Play-Science), which will be coordinated by Associate Professor Michail Giannakos at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The project has 11 partners from 10 countries. The CoM’n’Play-Science project aims to help Europe better understand the new ways in which informal science learning is taking place through various coding, making, and play activities that young Europeans are nowadays increasingly engaged with outside school and higher education science classrooms, beyond the formal boundaries of science education. The project aims to investigate a wide range of loci and modes of this kind of informal science learning, including:
- learning occurring in the context of such activities intentionally organized to achieve aims overtly related to informal science learning (e.g. in science centres, etc.)
- informal science learning that occurs as a by-product of youngsters’ various coding, making, and play activities that are not intentionally meant as science learning activities, and which may take place:
- in organized contexts (e.g. fabrication labs, coding labs, etc.), as well as
- independently in everyday life (e.g. personal hobbies and projects, gaming, etc.).
The candidate will have responsibility for contributing to theoretical development about coding, making and play to support science education, conducting empirical pilots and evaluations, and analysing primary and secondary data sets. Furthermore, the candidate will assist the project coordinator in project management tasks.
The position requires strong English oral and writing skills as the candidate will be interacting with a team of international researcher. The job will include providing several progress reports in English.
If the applicant’s PhD is not from an English-speaking country, the following tests can be used as documentation: TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:
- TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
- IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
- CAE/CPE: grade B or A
In addition, the candidates should have the following qualifications:
- PhD degree in learning technologies, human-centered computing, computing education or equivalent is required.
- Good understanding of quantitative and qualitative analysis methods.
- Expertise with designing and evaluating learning tools/practices.
- Demonstrated research capability via a good publications record.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
The following qualifications will be considered as an advantage:
- Pedagogical knowledge.
- Experience with participation in EU projects.
Potential successful candidate will be interviewed via Skype or other means.

The position is in code 1352 Post doctor, salary grade range 57-77 in the Norwegian State salary scale, gross NOK 482,500 - 710,100 per year, depending on qualifications. A deduction of 2% is made as a statutory contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The appointment is subject to the conditions in effect at any time for employees in the public sector.
