The Faculty of Medicine at UNSW has embarked on the most substantial investment in its history. This investment centres on academic recruitment but also has a significant a capital component as well as part of the overall Randwick Health Precinct Development and capital planning with all our health partners.

The Opportunity

In the last year the Faculty has cemented its collaboration with its Health District partners; its associated Medical Research Institutes, Black Dog, NeuRA as well as the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre. This alliance includes affiliates across the Health service of New South Wales.  This grouping has recently formalised its collaborative intent by forming up the “Mindgardens Alliance”. This ambitious clinical academic alliance aims to build on the strong success of the partners to build a leading mental health and neuroscience clinical research hub. This appointee would be a key partner to this initiative.

The Faculty is active in investment and recruitment across its formal research themes, including Neuroscience, a major portfolio of disciplines at UNSW. We now seek a new Head of the School of Psychiatry who will be charged with leading this discipline for the Faculty as a whole.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Developing a strategic plan for the School which plays to the strengths, priorities, academic environment and strategic needs of UNSW Medicine, its stakeholders and local communities.
  • Promoting high standards of academic excellence in teaching and learning, research and research training by establishing and communicating measures and expectations for academic and conjoint staff aligned to strategic needs and priorities.
  • Driving the overall teaching performance of the School by providing a valuable student education experience and fostering and promoting a culture of innovation and excellence.
  • Recruiting and retaining academic staff that excel in teaching and research and who align closely with the goals of the UNSW Medicine Strategy.
  • Enhancing the research profile of the School by improving the quality and quantity of research output and cross-collaboration with other Schools through alignment with and support for the Thematic approach of the Faculty.

About the Successful Applicant

You will be an academic leader, with a high reputation in research as well as forward planning. You will be expected to be able to set out an ambitious agenda for the future of psychiatry teaching and research at UNSW in close collaboration with its MRI and Health partners.  This is thus a senior leadership post which will attract appropriate remuneration.

You must be clinically qualified and be eligible for registration in NSW. Your academic interests are not proscribed, but it is expected that the successful candidate will have expertise in an aspect of the major disease burden of mental health, such as mood disorders and psychosis. Applicants who have successfully worked in the prevention, management or epidemiology of mental disorders in populations would be strongly encouraged to apply.
