The Singapore Management University (SMU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Provost. The next Provost will play a key leadership role in shaping and articulating SMU's academic and scholarly mission, promoting goals of academic excellence for the University's faculty and students. S/he will work with the President to develop a budget and accountability model that will allow resources to be allocated in ways that ensure the vitality and sustainability of the enterprise, enhance academic and scholarly excellence and retain strong fiscal discipline and accountability.

The Provost is responsible for the administration of all programs of instruction, research, mentoring and student life, and for facilitating the success of the University's faculty and students. To be effective, the Provost must understand the University and each school intimately so as to embrace its unique vision and facilitate its development. S/he must also facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and translate and incorporate each school's goals into the total SMU vision.

SMU is a premier university in Asia and is internationally recognized for its world-class research and distinguished teaching. It was established in Singapore in 2000, modeled upon the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In this short span of time, the SMU team has built a highly focused and successful university that delivers excellence in research and education. SMU is now home to over 9,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students across six schools: the School of Accountancy; Lee Kong Chian School of Business; School of Economics; School of Information Systems; School of Law; and School of Social Sciences. The diverse faculty team of more than 350 represent over 30 nationalities. SMU is ranked #11 among the world's specialist universities based on the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings (WUR) 2018.

SMU seeks to appoint an individual who brings excellent academic leadership to an institution deeply committed to the idea of a strong, cohesive university. The Provost will have a strong record of scholarship in her/his own academic discipline. S/he will be flexible and nimble in working across disciplines, able to move beyond her/his own field to champion disciplines across every school and work with faculty and administrators to plan, develop and execute innovative academic programs. S/he will be an inspirational and collaborative leader, with a demonstrated track record of leading successfully through persuasion, influence and the power of her/his ideas to achieve common goals among diverse stakeholders.

SMU's Provost must have a thorough understanding of the unique culture of SMU and be passionate about strengthening SMU's positioning within the Singapore Higher Education ecosystem. S/he should be an experienced leader, able to inspire others and build trust, with exceptional listening skills and a genuine desire to be part of the SMU campus community. S/he should have a strong commitment to shared governance, and welcome the input of SMU's various constituent communities, while being able to make timely and effective decisions. The Provost will be a courageous leader with bold vision and the ability to effectively operationalize strategic plans, including the ability to create the environment and establish the systems and structures to enable the realization of the vision, and the success of faculty and students. S/he will have an ability to pivot and adapt as necessary, and a willingness to take ownership and be held accountable.
