The Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics, one of the world’s leading research institutes in the field of human genetics, is seeking a new Centre Director to provide the strong and visionary leadership required to sustain its world class scientific output.
Crucial to the success of the Centre is that it has always had a vision for its work that is current, relevant, and ambitious, giving researchers at every career stage the confidence that their work has the potential to transform the field of genetics and its role in medicine.
As Director, you will be responsible for developing and successfully implementing that clear and ambitious strategic vision for the Centre, providing inspirational academic leadership to ensure the Centre achieves the highest possible standards of excellence in all of its activities in line with the strategic aims of Wellcome.
You will manage the research direction of the Centre, maintain an outstanding environment for the conduct of world class scientific research, represent the Centre at national and international levels, and oversee the effective deployment of the Centre’s resources.
You will have an understanding of the Centre’s mission, the capacity to develop a clear vision for its future, and the proven ability to develop, plan, and implement the Centre’s strategic aims. You will have the demonstrable ability to provide strong academic leadership, to enthuse and inspire, to promote excellence in teaching and research, a commitment to public engagement with science, and to create an environment in which these can all flourish and excel.
You will have a demonstrable track record as a leading internationally-recognised researcher in a scientific area that complements or extends the existing strengths that the Centre has in basic science and translational research in the field of human genetics and disease, evidence of a substantial publication record, and a strong record of independently obtaining competitive, external grant research funding.
The position is a fixed-term Directorship for five years in the first instance, with possibility of renewal, and is funded by the Nuffield Department of Medicine.
