The University of Macau (UM) is the flagship public university in Macao, which gives it a unique advantage in pursuing the goal of becoming a world-class university with regional characteristics. In recent years, UM has made significant progress and has gained increasing international reputation for its teaching, research, and community service. To better support higher education development in Macao and to meet society’s ever-increasing demand for high-quality professionals, UM in 2014 relocated to the current campus which covers approximately 1.09km2. The large campus, the implementation of Asia’s largest residential college system, the unique ‘4-in-1’ education model consisting of discipline-specific education, general education, research and internship education, and community and peer education, combine to provide a multifaceted education to students to help them achieve well-rounded development. In addition to adopting a governance and management system in line with international standards and practices, UM internationally recruits outstanding scholars to create a multilingual and multicultural learning environment for students. Recently, UM has appointed a world renowned scholar as Rector to lead the University in its next stage of development. With the new Rector’s rich experience in higher education management and global vision, as well as the new developments and initiatives of the University, UM is faced with unprecedented opportunities and provides exciting new possibilities for professional development.
The University is conducting a global search for the position of Vice Rector (i.e., Vice President or Pro-Vice Chancellor) responsible for all matters related to research. The Vice Rector (Research) will work closely with the Rector in leading programmes related to research activities and developing policy measures to foster an effective research environment in order to fulfill the University’s mission and strategic plans, including but not limited to integrating internal research resources effectively, promoting technology transfer of research achievements, expanding exchanges and collaboration with international researchers, and promoting internal research achievements, aiming to strengthen the global competitiveness of the University.
The successful candidate should have the following credentials:
1. An earned PhD degree and excellent track record in research;
2. Good understanding of international higher educational practices, particularly in research environment and infrastructure;
3. Knowledge of and support for interdisciplinary research;
4. Demonstrable competence in leading a research administration with a successful record of planning, managing budgets and administering grants;
5. Proven ability in raising external funding for supporting University’s research development;
6. Experience in strengthening the scholarly and innovative profile of the University;
7. Demonstrable competence in management and communication;
8. Proficiency in English is required as it is the working language, while knowledge in Chinese/Portuguese will be an advantage.
Position and Remuneration
Remuneration offered will be competitive and commensurate with the successful candidate’s academic qualification, current position and professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
