Appointment of Head of the School of Science and the Environment
The University of Worcester is a high achieving, award-winning, dynamic institution set within a committed and engaged community. One of the most successful new universities of recent years with numerous accolades for inclusivity, contribution to the community, campus design, and environmental initiatives, the University was shortlisted for the 2016 Times Higher Education University of the Year award and received a Silver in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework. With over 10,000 students, and more than 1,100 staff members, the University has an excellent track record of sustained financial performance and strategic investment in high quality, innovative facilities.
The University of Worcester now seeks a Head for the School of Science and the Environment to lead an ambitious academic community at an exciting time of its development. The University is in the process of applying to the General Medical Council to open a Medical School in 2021. Depending on academic experience, the Head of the School of Science and the Environment may have the opportunity to play an important role in the medical school project, which is of significant strategic importance to the University.
The School currently offers a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. It is dedicated to providing an outstanding education and student experience; driving distinctive and relevant research; and building active and enriching partnerships and external collaborations. Its research focuses on solving today’s key challenges, working collaboratively and internationally to make a difference to society. Working in collaboration with different disciplines and with other universities, private industry and the public sector, its research aims to achieve real-life benefits and shape lives - from changing the understanding of farming practices to improved treatments for disease.
Reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the Head of School will provide academic and strategic leadership to the School as well as contribute effectively at university level as a member of the University Executive team. Successful candidates will be able to evidence an outstanding track record of leadership and success in a relevant academic area, and will demonstrate the ability to build on existing research strengths whilst continuing to deliver an exceptional student experience. Energetic and with a keen sense of integrity, they will offer a positive ‘can do’ attitude and approach.
The University of Worcester is committed to providing a vibrant, ethical and sustainable working environment that values equality and diversity.
