This post will be placed within the digital signal processing for intelligent systems and communications (SPCOM) group, Institute of Signals, Sensors and Systems (ISSS). ISSS is one of five Research Institutes forming the research infrastructure of the School of Engineering & Physical Sciences (EPS), Heriot-Watt University and has an international research reputation and close connection with the professional and industrial world of science, engineering and technology. EPS’s research ranges from fundamental sciences through to engineering applications, all of which are supported by strong external funding and has around 110 full-time academic staff who drive this research activity and are based in 5 research institutes

The digital signal processing for intelligent systems and communications (SPCOM) group is involved in a range of research projects at the leading edge of advanced signal processing algorithms, information-theoretic studies, and real world effects with key applications in communications systems, remote sensing and Radar. Broader application areas are also addressed through the team’s involvement in the University Defence Research Centre. This group also strongly linked with University of Edinburgh IDCOM. Industrial collaborators include Bell-Laboratories, Alcatel-Lucent, Defence Science and Technology Lab (DSTL), European Space Agency (ESA) and QinetiQ.

The group is presently funded by EPSRC (EP/M014126/1) Large Scale Antenna Systems Made Practical: Advanced Signal Processing for Compact Deployments [LSAS-SP] and (EP/I037156/1) Physical Layer Network Coding for Wireless Networks (PLAN), Defence Science Technology Lab (DSTL) for Cognitive Radar and ad-hoc mobile networks, UKIERI (British Council) for implementation of cognitive radio and European Union Frame Work 7 project Advanced Dynamic Spectrum 5G Mobile Networks Employing Licences Shared Access (ADEL) .

The research project A Unified Multiple Access Framework For Next Generation Mobile Networks By Removing Orthogonality [MANGO] funded by UK research council (EPSRC), involves three academic partners (University of Edinburgh), Lancaster University and Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Campus) and industrial partners including Bell-Labs, Alcatel-Lucent Technologies, USA and QinetiQ, UK. The research will explore and validate the new concept non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) which has been recently recognised as a promising multiple access (MA) technique to significantly improve spectral efficiency of future wireless networks and envisioned to be key component of the next generation mobile networks. However, there is still lack of insightful understanding of the fundamental limits of NOMA and also there is a large gap in the performance evaluation of NOMA transceivers under single-/multiple antennas, single-/multi-cell cases. The aim of this project is to establish a unified theoretical framework for various forms of NOMA, including power domain and code domain NOMA, and develop sophisticated signal processing algorithms to realize the concept of NOMA in single-/multiple antenna, single-/multi-cell scenarios.

We are seeking to recruit an experienced and highly motivated PDRA willing to work as part of a team. Applicants must have a PhD degree (or have submitted a PhD thesis) in Electrical, Electronic, computer engineering, Computer science or a related discipline, have excellent knowledge and strong background in Signal Processing for wireless communications/ networks (in particular physical/ cross layer technologies), MIMO signal processing, coding and information theory, stochastic geometry, cashing and IoT, machine learning, user interface technologies, mathematics and optimisation evidenced by high-quality research publications. The applicants must also have excellent written, oral presentation, and interpersonal skills, and software programming skills (Matlab and/or C/C++/JAVA) appropriate for wireless communications simulation work. It is desirable that the applicants have some postdoctoral experience, website design and database programming skills, knowledge and experience in machine learning, Embedded systems, Embedded Software, sparse signal processing, wireless MIMO testbed experience, random matrix theory, channel estimation etc..

The post holder is required to;

Assist the development of student research skills, and be expected to contribute to the assessment of student knowledge in the context of teaching and supervision duties. Could be expected to contribute to specialist courses such as research methods and equipment.

Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research with the assistance of a mentor, if required. Conduct individual and collaborative research projects, making use of relevant research techniques and methods. Disseminate results of research in peer reviewed journals and conferences, and/or other appropriate media. Continue to update personal knowledge and to develop skills within own specialist research area. Maintain written records of research results and progress generated intellectual property and data analysis. Contribute to the production of research reports and publications.

Write research reports and publications. Analyse and interpret the results of own research and generate original ideas bases on outcomes. Prepare proposals and applications to external bodies, e.g. for funding purposes. Use initiative and creativity to identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio.

Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration. Work with academic colleagues on areas of shared research interest and contribute to collaborative decision making. Join external networks to share information and identify potential sources of funds.

Provide guidance as required to support staff, research students and any other students who may be assisting with the research.

Contribute, under supervision, to the planning of research projects, including the development of new grant/contract proposals. Make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding and form relationships for future collaboration.

We are looking for a creative and highly motivated researcher willing to work as part of a team.

The ideal candidate will have a strong theoretical understanding and an experimental background in one or more of the following fields: signal processing and MIMO wireless communications. Good communication skills and an appropriate publication record are essential.

General tasks will involve scientific research; analysis and interpretation of data; daily oversight of the activities of postgraduate and undergraduate project students in the laboratory; communication with other investigators involved in this collaborative project; preparation of scientific papers; presentation of research at conferences.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct and lead their own experiments whilst also supervising the activities of junior group members and PhD students.

Responsibilities will also include assistance in the day-to-day maintenance of the experimental facilities, liaising with companies and external collaborators.

The successful candidate is also expected to be involved in our outreach activities, with roles that can be tuned to the specific preferences of the candidate but will involve for example interviews, talks for the general public and preparation of experimental demonstrators.
