PhD Position within Aquaculture Structures
Faculty of Engineering
Department of Marine Technology
We have an open PhD position related to this topic: Floating closed aquaculture cages.
The aquaculture industry in Norway is having an increased focus on the use of closed cages. The motivation for this is the possibility to control the water environment in the cage, and through this avoid parasites such as sea-lice. Closed cages also give the industry a tool to pursue different production strategies such as e.g. post-smolt production in closed cages. As floating structures, closed cages are different from conventional net based cages. Sloshing, for instance, becomes an important factor and resonance related problems are significant in a closed cage.
It is important to understand the structures in order to make them safe and reliable, and the main objective of the research is to establish a better understanding of the behavior of closed cages in the wave and current exposure of the coastal zone. This includes both understanding the structure, but also understanding the conditions at the site of installation. The wave and current conditions at relevant sites in the Norwegian coastal zone will form the basis of analysis which will be done on both operational and extreme conditions.
The candidate will be included in relevant on-going projects where the department is a partner, such as the Centre for Research-Based Innovation on exposed aquaculture operations – SFI EXPOSED (www.exposedaquaculture.no/en), and the NFR-KPN Safe operation of closed cages in waves (www.sintef.no/en/projects/safe-operation-of-closed-aquaculture-cages-in-waves-ccw). Both projects are hosted by SINTEF Ocean.
The position requires a Master’s degree in marine technology, industrial mathematics or a similar relevant area. A background in marine hydrodynamics is favorable. The successful candidate should be enthusiastic and highly motivated and be willing to work both independently and with other researchers. Very good skills in written and oral communication in English is important, and it is also favorable that the candidate can communicate in Norwegian. The successful candidate must also fulfill the requirement for admission to a doctoral program.
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 436 900 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
