The University of Leeds is one of the largest higher education institutions in the UK and renowned globally for the quality of the teaching and research.

The University has committed over £500m to improve the student experience and is investing a further £100m in the academic community delivering world leading research.

The University of Leeds anticipates £200m of grant funding for research by 2021, a 50% increase from current levels.  Therefore, the University needs to ensure it has the right framework, controls and processes in place to cater for this additional funding.  The Head of Research Operations & Reporting will be responsible for delivering this.

The Role

  • Lead the development and implementation of a Research Operations vision and strategy, ensuring the service provision meets the needs of a world class, research intensive University and underpins the achievement of the University’s strategic objectives.
  • Delivery of robust systems and processes for the planning, forecasting and monitoring of research income and recoveries.
  • Manage, coach and motivate the eight strong research finance team plus the functional leadership of the Faculty Research Offices.

The Candidate

  • We are looking for a candidate with both a strategic and detailed view of research and grant funding, who understands the wider picture and how grant funding supports the University’s goals. This will include the ability to deliver a robust grant management framework, which is future proofed for the anticipated additional levels of funding.
  • Ability to lead, manage and motivate a team of eight in the central team, and the functional leadership of the satellite research teams within the faculties, developing their capability to cater for future demand.
  • The gravitas and influencing skills to support the senior University leadership team, including the Professional Services Directors, Deans, Pro Deans, and Deputy Vice Chancellor.
