Associate Professor in Social Anthropology
The Department of Social Anthropology at NTNU is advertising a permanent position as Associate Professor in Social Anthropology with a particular focus on anthropology of technology. The position is full time.
About the Department
The Department of Social Anthropology is part of the Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences and is one of four anthropological teaching departments in Norway. The staff engages in ethnographic research in Asia, Africa, Europe, the Global North, and South America. The research activity at the department is organized through four strategic research groups: Culture, innovation and the future; Anthropology of organizations and sustainability; Global inequalities; and Migration, mobility and settlement. The department offers degrees at the bachelor, masters, and PhD levels. There are currently 18 scientific staff and approximately 300 students on undergraduate and graduate levels.
Qualifications and obligations
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the long term development of the research and teaching community at the Department, and will be part of the department’s strategic research group Culture, innovation and the future. The successful candidate will be committed to take an active part in the department’s research activities. He or she will have the right and obligation to carry out research and publish within his/her academic field, including to contribute to and develop the research group and strategic fields. The successful candidate is expected to initiate and take part in project development, and apply for external funding for research projects. The candidate will participate in teaching, supervision and examination work, at all levels, within general anthropology and in specialized courses in anthropology of technology. The candidate will take part in further development of the teaching programs, and of varied learning methods. The candidate also has an obligation to disseminate his/her research to the general public. He or she is expected to develop and maintain disciplinary and interdisciplinary networks, regionally, nationally and internationally. She/he will participate in administrative work and take part in committee work.
The successful candidate must have:
- A PhD in Social Anthropology
- Outstanding research competence in social anthropology, with expertise in anthropology of technology. Particular emphasis will be placed on research activities and publications in the last five years (excluding parental leaves), and the candidate’s future research potential.
- A demonstrated ability to obtain external funding and carry out research as well as develop new projects.
- A passion for teaching and the ability to inspire and communicate well with students
- Documented pedagogical and didactic skills in university education, or completing a university pedagogical course within a period of two years following your appointment.
- Good teamwork and communication skills, and the ability to contribute to a constructive
- working environment
- Personal suitability and motivation for the position
The following additional qualifications will be given weight in the assessment:
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in a Scandinavian language, in order to be able to participate actively in all the functions the position entails, including teaching and administrative tasks
- The ability to involve and engage students in teaching where the course’s objectives, content and assessment situations are closely interlinked
- Experience in and/or interest in the development of varied learning methods and digital tools in teaching
- A reflective and conscientious attitude to your own work relating to teaching and guidance
- The ability to build and nurture networks, regionally, nationally and internationally
- Experience with research collaborations, including interdisciplinary ones
- Experience with community engagement
Pedagogical qualifications will be evaluated. This evaluation will be based on documented pedagogical material, pedagogical education, presentational skills in the applicant’s scientific work, experience in supervising PhD or master’s candidates, and other teaching and pedagogical experience.
Any person employed without university pedagogical qualifications or other documented equivalent qualifications will be required to attend and complete a course in university pedagogics within two years. NTNU offers such courses. For further information see:

Payment and working conditions:
Salary for Associate Professor: Salary Code 1011, starting salary NOK 490 900 minimum per year. The successful candidate will normally be paid between NOK 499 600 and NOK 650 200 per year. By law, 2% of the gross salary will be paid to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from salary deductions.
The appointment will be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The employee is expected to accept possible changes in work tasks.
Primary residence in Trondheim is a prerequisite.
The total work obligation is divided into research, teaching and administration. The division between these fields of work obligation will vary, but approximately equal time should be devoted to research and teaching.
Employees in academic positions who are not already fluent in a Scandinavian language must within three years obtain knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at an equivalent standard to Level 3 in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided at the Department of Language and Literature, NTNU. The University provides such courses.
