Research Associate - Wildlife Assistant-Barfield Lab
The Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology Laboratory (ARBL) and the Equine Reproduction Laboratory (ERL) are recognized as one of the first 16 Programs of Research and Scholarly Excellence (PRSE) at Colorado State University (CSU). The vision of the ARBL/ERL PRSE is to be a world-class center that fosters advancement in reproductive health for animals and humans through integrative research and training. This internationally known program has an administrative home in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, but also includes faculty members from other departments in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) and the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS). A team approach is used to identify problems, determine approaches and conduct research. The ARBL is devoted to helping animals, people and the planet and champions CVMBS values of accountability, collaboration, team and transparency.
The ARBL also manages care and housing of hundreds of large research animals (horses, cattle, sheep, goats, bison, camels, and pigs) on the CSU foothills campus.
This is the entry-level position for individuals with less than 3 years of professional, post-baccalaureate (or equivalent) experience.This position will assist the Director of Bison Reproduction Program with outreach including public tours of ARBL and bison facilities and assisting with hosting workshops or educational experiences to special interest groups related to bison programs. This person will assist the ongoing efforts in Colorado and Montana with specific focus on the quarantine program by ongoing testing of bison here and in Montana; assisting with grazing studies and movement of animals, and collection of samples from herds in CO and MT. This position will assist with managing the Laramie Foothills Bison Conservation Herd and will help coordinate efforts with project partners and local, state and federal agencies.
Required Job Qualifications
At least 2 years work experience with large animals, preferably bison, or wildlife.
Excellent communication skills, oral and written.
Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
Experience maintaining animal handling facilities and training animals in the facilities to be handled.
Some practical teaching experience in the field or demonstrated ability to teach others.
Preferred Job Qualifications
Experience with ultrasound, embryo transfer, artificial insemination and sample collection while handling large animals, particularly bison or cattle.
Experience working with and organizing various stakeholders such as state and federal agencies and corporate and non-profit partners.
Interest in large mammal conservation and the intersection of animal reproduction and disease.
