Equine Sports Medicine Veterinary Technician
The Equine Sports Medicine (ESM) service provides specialty veterinary care for equine athletes as part of the equine industry in Colorado. This primarily mobile service provides treatment and diagnostics options to clients and their animals in the field, as well as in collaboration with other services as a part of the Equine hospital operating under the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital, as a part of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the University.
The position triages, assesses, monitors, treats, evaluates, and coordinates care of injured equines in the Equine Sports Medicine Service under the guidance of faculty Clinicians and residents; provides limited clinical and didactic instruction to professional veterinary medical students, and shares job responsibilities in collaboration with two other full time technicians for the service.
Required Job Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree with two years of experience as a veterinary technician
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
• Ability to jog, sit, stand, crouch and kneel for extended periods of time
• Ability to lift heavy items, up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Job Qualifications
• Impeccable attention to detail, organization and ability to learn clinician and client preferences
• Previous experience as a veterinary technician for Equine veterinary practice
• Extensive expertise in horse handling. Ability to restrain horses of varying training levels for treatment and procedures.
• Established equine industry relationships within the Colorado horse industry.

Job Duty Category Nursing Duty/Responsibility
Nursing and technical support under the guidance of and clinical faculty and residents by providing veterinary technical care for ESM cases. Travel to client farms with the ESM service and assist with diagnosis and treatment of patients. Perform and assist with diagnostic procedures such as radiographs, ultrasounds, joint injections, diagnostic analgesia and lameness exams. Assist with rehabilitation inpatients, on an as-needed basis. Work with ESM clinicians to establish plan of care and assists in coordination with various groups within and outside of the hospital, if required. Utilizes VTH computer software programs to complete service operations as well as assist clinicians, students and residents in their use, and share images to clients or outside partners such as rDVMs or farriers, as necessary.

Assist in maintaining all equipment used by the ESM service to ensure equipment remains functioning properly. Work with ESM Admin Assistant and Faculty to maintain inventory and stock all vehicles used by the ESM service along with back stock cabinets. Maintain relationships with pharmacy and central supply personnel and orders supplies from respective departments when necessary. Coordinate with VTH & CSU Facilities employees to manage maintenance needs of all service vehicles.

Assist in the teaching of 4th year clinical PVM students, externs and volunteers that shadow the ESM service. Support ESM resident training. Act as a point of contact for ESM clients and assist as necessary. Act as an ambassador for visitors or potential resident candidates for ESM.

Ensure the timely completion of daily paperwork associated with the ESM service. Assist the ESM Coordinator and Faculty as needed with other operational duties such as invoicing, client communication, appointment setting and medical record maintenance.
Recognize areas of opportunity for expense savings such as back stock supplies, expirations on materials, situations that may allow for return of supplies, and efficiencies to best utilize resources & supplies
