Applications are invited for a three-year Postgraduate studentship, supported by the School of Engineering and Applied Science, to be undertaken within the Fibre Lasers Research Group, Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies at Aston University. The successful applicant will join an established experimental group working on development of novel fibre lasers and accessing Mid-IR wavelength range.

The position is available to start in October 2018 (subject to negotiation)

Financial Support

This studentship includes a fee bursary to cover the home/EU fees rate plus a maintenance allowance of £14,777 in 2018/19.

Applicants from outside the EU may apply for this studentship but will need to pay the difference between the ‘Home/EU’ and the ‘Overseas’ tuition fees, currently this is £12,290 in 2018/19.

Background of the Project

This project will develop femtosecond fibre lasers reaching the mid-infrared range (3 - 10 μm and beyond) to advance existing opportunities in medical applications, particularly cancer diagnostics. Through the project novel glass matrixes and designs of optical fibres and unique materials will be investigated. Planned project activities include: fibre laser modelling, design and optimisation; design and development of broadband fibre laser systems covering near/mid-IR range, development OPOs and supercontinuum laser systems. The resulting laser systems will be implemented into biomedical sensors.

Person Specification

The successful applicant should have a first class or upper second class honours degree or equivalent qualification in optical telecommunications, laser physics, laser technologies, Applied Physics or Physics. Preferred skill requirements include knowledge/experience of experimental work in the field of nonlinear optics, fibre optics, laser technology; skills in LabView or MatLab. If English is not your first language, you should have IELTS 6.5 (with no less than 6.0 in each band) or higher.
