PhD Studentship - Synthetic membranes for separation and release processes in biomedical application
Applications are invited for a three year Postgraduate studentship, supported by the School of Engineering and Applied Science, to be undertaken within the Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry department linked to the Aston Institute of Materials Research at Aston University. The successful applicant will join an established experimental group working on synthesis and characterisation of hydrogels for biomedical applications.
The starting date of this position is subject to negotiation.
This studentship includes a fee bursary to cover the home/EU fees rate plus a maintenance allowance of £14,777 in 2018/19.
Applicants from outside the EU may apply for this studentship but will need to pay the difference between the ‘Home/EU’ and the ‘Overseas’ tuition fees, currently this is £12,290 in 2018/19. As part of the application you will be required to confirm that you have applied for, or, secured this additional funding.
Background of the Project
Membranes are a key component in the functioning of the human body and other processes such as energy conversion and storage systems. Synthetic membranes are used in separation processes that include water desalination, purification of bio-products and foods, gas separation and pervaporation. In the medical field, artificial membranes are critical in processes that require micro- and ultrafiltration, e.g. renal, hepatic and pancreatic dialysis, and for controlled drug delivery. Biological membranes are complex in structure and function. They play a critical role in complex and specific transport tasks, which they accomplish quickly and efficiently with minimal expenditure of energy when healthy. Although progress has been made, synthetic membranes are yet to fully mimic the complex tasks carried out by biological membranes. The aim of this project is to serve as a platform to further the understanding of the transport mechanisms of synthetic membranes and the ability to alter this as desired by the application.
The successful applicant should have a first class or upper second class honours degree or equivalent qualification in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Biomedical Engineering or similar. Preferred skill requirements include knowledge/experience of commercial operations, laboratory procedures, analytical chemistry, Microsoft Office, project management, modelling and good communication and written skills.
