PhD Position in Growth Control of Bacteria
A PhD position is available at the Department of Chemical Engineering. The appointment has a duration of 3 years with the possibility of until 1-year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department. The position is financed by the EU and has a special responsibility in the project iFermenter.

The Bio-process system engineering group in NTNU seeks hard-working, creative persons holding master degree in biotechnology/ Chemical Engineering to join our team in the new European project “iFermenter” (www.ifermenter.eu). The team will apply real-time feedback control during fermentation of bacteria. We will not only measure traditional fermentation conditions (e.g. temperature, O2, feeding) but we will also use exciting tools to acquire automatic measurements from the cell factories themselves, such as expression rates and cellular growth values. The team will control those parameters to achieve an optimal production of rare antimicrobial peptides.

The applicant must have an MSc (or equivalent) in Biotechnology or Chemical Engineering. The successful candidate must have documented knowledge (courses, laboratory work and master thesis/project work) in the following:
- Aerobic laboratory fermentation of bacteria, converting sugars to other products
- Measurements systems such as HPLC, mass spec, Photospectrometer, etc
Any knowledge and/or experience in the following is considered advantage:
- Laboratory work and fermentation of Corynebacterium
- Industrial sugars (e.g. xylose, mannose) as substrate for bacteria
- Programming in R or/and matlab
- Proficiency in systemsbiology (mathematical modelling)
The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong ability to work problem oriented. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams.
We prefer to start the position during August-September 2018, but we will consider other options from excellent candidates.
The regulations for PhD programmes at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required. The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English(CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
Terms of employment
The appointment of the PhD fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study.

The position as PhD is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.
