Executive Director, SNOLAB   

SNOLAB is a unique, world-class, international facility for deep underground scientific research.  Located 2km underground in the Vale Creighton mine, near Sudbury, Ontario, SNOLAB hosts a suite of science facilities including a 5000m2 underground clean room and surface laboratories.  The science programme at SNOLAB is primarily focussed on subatomic and astroparticle physics, specifically the search for dark matter and neutrino studies.  

The vision of SNOLAB is to be the partner of choice for underground physics, providing world-class infrastructure and thereby delivering world-class science.  To realize this vision, our mission is to enable, spearhead, catalyze and promote underground science, whilst inspiring both the public and future professionals in the field.  To deliver the mission, and place SNOLAB in a position to realize the long-term vision, four goals have been identified, with associated objectives and critical success factors: Enable and spearhead world-class underground science; Develop and maintain world-class facilities and infrastructure; Educate, inspire and innovate; and, Develop quality delivery systems of internationally recognized standard.

The Executive Director has overall responsibility for all aspects of facility and science programme management at SNOLAB. This includes all aspects of health and safety; strategic planning and implementation of the strategic plan; community development; staffing levels and staff development; business process development; funding development and budgetary control; scientific programme development; and facility infrastructure maintenance and development.

The successful candidate will have an advanced degree in a physics related discipline, demonstrated leadership abilities, scientific insight and vision.  They will have an outstanding international research record with substantial experience in a senior role.  The successful candidate will have achieved international stature in the fields of particle and/or nuclear physics and will have a proven track record for attracting operational and capital funding for research projects.  Experience with administrative and financial matters associated with large scale science projects is required along with strong communication, interpersonal, negotiating and relationship building skills.

The Executive Director position will be a five-year initial appointment associated with one of the member institutions and is renewable.  This position is available June 1, 2019. SNOLAB seeks to attract and retain an Executive Director to oversee its science and research operations and ultimately, to mandate success.  Salary will be commensurate with that for full professors at top tier universities across Canada and with equivalent positions at comparable science and research facilities across Canada.
