Description of Work Unit

The Department of Clinical Sciences mission is to assure the health and productivity of animals to meet societal needs through high quality educational programs for professional veterinary medical students, graduate veterinarians, and the public through a faculty and veterinary medical center of excellence, and to advance and disseminate comparative biomedical knowledge in an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration.

In 2017, the James L. Voss Veterinary teaching hospital saw 1386 cases through our Equine Surgery service. The Department of Clinical Sciences has a strong tradition in equine surgery with successful graduate and residency training programs that have an excellent reputation in both passing the ACVSlarge animal surgery boards and producing high quality research. The VTH is amidst a large fund-raising effort to construct a new, state-of-the-art Equine Hospital that will encompass a new surgical, medical and sports medicine and rehabilitation facility. Preliminary construction date is set for within the next two years.

Research and collaboration opportunities exist throughout the Department, the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the University. In early 2019 we will be opening the C. Wayne McIlwraith Translational Medicine Institute, a state of the art research facility adjacent to the VTH supporting translational medical research and medical continuing education.

Position Summary

Equine surgery is an important tertiary care and specialty discipline in veterinary medicine. This position will support both clinical and didactic teaching in the DVM program in the area of equine surgery. The position also supports client service and revenue generation in the VTH. This position will partner with three tenured Equine Surgery positions to provide 52 weeks of full time clinical service in equine surgery.

The preferred candidate will have a strong interest in maintaining and building a strong research program in disciplines related to equine general or orthopedic surgery. The preferred candidate will also have strong interest and ability to work in a collaborative and team environment with nearly 100 other veterinary clinicians representing over 20 different specialties.

Required Job Qualifications

  • DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree
  • Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Surgery (ACVS).
  • An advanced graduate degree or equivalent research experience
  • Experience instructing veterinary students, interns, and residents in the diagnosis and management of equine surgical diseases

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Teaching/Advising/Mentoring Duty/Responsibility

  • Clinical – Provide active instruction to 3rd-year and 4th-year Veterinary Medical students in the hospital environment (see Service and Outreach). Participate in the clinical training of interns and residents rotating through the Equine Surgery service. Share responsibility for the training and oversight of Equine Surgery residents.
  • Didactic – Provide lecture and laboratory instruction to DVM and graduate students on topics related to equine general and orthopedic surgery.
  • Graduate Training – Participate in the advising, mentoring, and instruction of residents and graduate students (MS and PhD candidates).

  • Clinical Assignment – Provide 26 weeks of clinical service per year to the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The Equine Surgery and Lameness service sees horses from around Colorado and the neighboring states. The primary outpatient case is referred for lameness examination. Most horse breeds are represented and the caseload is broad in the presenting complaints.
  • Management of and direct participation in the Equine Surgery service, as well as providing backup support for interns/residents and Critical Care faculty for emergency orthopedic cases.
  • Outreach – Provide consultation for veterinarians in Colorado and other states. Develop and participate in professional continuing education for veterinarians.
  • Administrative – Participate in Departmental, College, and University administrative committees as well as active participation in the organization and implementation of the goals for the Equine Surgery service.
