Executive Dean of the College of Science and Engineering
The National University of Ireland Galway seeks to appoint an Executive Dean of the College of Science and Engineering. As a member of the University’s Management Team, this is a key strategic leadership position with management responsibility at University level and for the College of Science and Engineering.
College of Science and Engineering
Following academic restructuring to merge two Colleges, the new College of Science and Engineering will come into effect in September 2018, with the appointment of an Executive Dean of Science and Engineering to lead the new entity. The College consists of six Schools, across the physical, mathematical and natural sciences, engineering and computer science, with details as follows:
• School of Chemistry
• School of Computer Science
• School of Engineering
• School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics
• School of Natural Sciences
• School of Physics
The new College is also the home of primary affiliation for three University Research Institutes, the Ryan Institute for Environment, Marine and Energy Research; the Data Science Institute, and the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science Research (NCBES). In addition, two Science Foundation Ireland-funded national research Centres, Insight, the Centre for Data Analytics and Curam, the Centre for Biomedical Devices, are affiliated to the College.
The amalgamation of the Colleges of Science and Engineering & Informatics into one College represents a significant milestone in the evolution of the academic structures at NUI Galway, with the aim of achieving greater decentralisation of responsibilities to our Colleges. With the development of larger, more autonomous academic units and greater decentralisation of decision-making, the role of Executive Dean of College is a critical one in shaping the academic direction of the University and delivering on research and teaching strategies.
The successful candidate will be required to contribute effectively as a member of the University Management Team in the management and leadership of the University ensuring the strategic development, performance and corporate management of NUI Galway, in line with our strategic plan.
This is a major leadership role within the University with clear responsibility for promoting the quality of research, teaching and societal impact within the College, combined with accountability for ensuring that it achieves its academic and financial objectives.
The Executive Dean will be required to manage the development of the operational structures, processes and procedures for the new College, as well as leading the setting of targets across all areas of the College’s activity.
Demonstrated qualities of academic leadership, strategic thinking, change management, and staff mentorship are required for the post. The capacity to build relationships not only within the College, but also with other colleges and across the University will be vital to the success of the new Executive Dean.
