Vice-Principal (Policy and Strategic Partnerships)

Queen Mary University of London is one of the UK’s foremost research-intensive higher education institutions. We have a distinctive and diverse student profile, world leading research across the full spectrum of discipline areas, and an international reputation for the quality of our public and community engagement activities.  It is this combination of attributes that makes Queen Mary a truly unique institution, which is seeking to transform lives, shape society and strengthen the economy, on a local, national and international level. Based predominately in a creative and culturally diverse area of east London, we have a historical and deeply-held commitment to social justice and public engagement, and our values underpin all our activity.

We seek to appoint a Vice-Principal (Policy and Strategic Partnerships) to provide leadership to our work on policy and partnership development at the local, regional and international level. This will involve helping Queen Mary engage with key figures in central and local Government, in business and industry, in local organisations and in national/international agencies. Activity will be focussed on raising Queen Mary’s profile and enhancing our core mission of internationally leading education, research and public engagement. The role will also play a critical role in ensuring that Queen Mary is active in national and international discussions about higher education, helping to shape the future for the sector and to retain those key attributes and principles that are fundamental to the purpose and success of universities.

In realising the benefits from these activities, it will be essential for the role to work closely with the rest of the Queen Mary Senior Executive and a range of other colleagues, to ensure that opportunities are taken forward and that the institution continues to engage with, and help shape, the external environment.

As a member of the Queen Mary Senior Executive (QMSE), the Vice-Principal (Policy and Strategic Partnerships) will work closely with other Vice-Principals and senior officers, to contribute to the development and implementation of Queen Mary’s strategy and ensure that the University responds quickly and effectively to changes in the external environment.

The role involves spending time at all Queen Mary sites and, as would be expected of this role, there will be a requirement for frequent meetings and visits to external organisations. The appointment will be for a five-year term in the first instance.

We are looking for candidates who can show substantial experience and success in engaging with key individuals and organisations across government, industry/business and a range of other agencies at the local, national and international level. They must have a very strong understanding of government agendas in areas such as education, skills, the economy, industrial development, regional development, health and culture.  In addition, they must have an excellent grasp of the higher education landscape and a clear affinity with the purpose and objectives of public, research-focussed universities. A specific alignment with Queen Mary’s unique profile and our values is essential.

Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave and the University’s pension scheme.
