Professor/associated professor position in the field of Wood sciences/Timber engineering

Job description:

This position is open for professor in the field of wood sciences or timber engineering with an overlap in the final consumption sector of wood-based products. The Czech Republic indicates a low share of the consumption of wood products and exports a relatively high percentage of unprocessed wood material abroad. The aim of the mobility objective is to reinforce the current team focused on wood sciences with an expert from a country where renewable materials are thriving on a larger scale especially in the construction industry. It is possible to expect a high contribution in the development of a new study field of wood construction and wood-based construction at our faculty and to increase opportunities of R&D in timber structures and wood-based materials. Another objective of this activity will be to expand the possibilities of participation in international research networks and access to projects such as Horizon 2020 etc. The aim is also to acquire an expert with years of experience with the cooperation of the knowledge institution and the commercial sphere.

The successful candidate will have access to a brand-new infrastructure focused on wood sciences and timber engineering. 

The selected candidate will be expected to lead teams of PhD. students and to be expert in master theses. 

We are a young and dynamic research team with close collaborations with international partners. Opportunities exist for international exchange visits and meetings.

  • Ph.D. or other appropriate level 8 of ISCED (International Standard Classification of Education) qualification completed 7 or more years before May 2018
  • The applicant has worked outside of the Czech Republic for at least 2 years as a researcher (0.5 contract or more) during the last 3 years
  • H-index min. 8,5 - calculated according to the guidelines provided in the normalization table below („Guidelines for the calculation of the normalized h-index“). Calculation of H-index value is based on Web of Science and Scopus. Researchers in social and human sciences does not have to fulfil this requirement.
  • The applicant has already published 3 peer-reviewed research outputs during last 5 years
  • The applicant has already participated in at least 1 international grant or national grant over the last 5 years as a coordinator or co-coordinator (from the date of submission of the request for funding)
  • The applicant will be involved in conducting research
  • The applicant will be obliged to take an active part in conferences, seminars, workshops, etc. organised by the receiving institution, at least 1 during the 6 months of mobility
  • We expect that the researcher will contribute to the preparation of an application for an international project, e.g. H2020 type, which the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences  will be involved in
  • All research activities will be conducted in English; knowledge of the Czech language is not required. Excellent English communication and writing skills on the level of native speaker is essential.

Selection procedure:

Selection will be based on the relevance of candidates’ professional interests and experience, as well as excellence in research achievements.

Position duration, starting date and salary: 

The duration of the position is 6 months, starting in September 2018.  The gross monthly salary starts at 60,000 CZK (circa 2,300 EUR) including health insurance and social security cover. The starting monthly salary represents double of the median salary in the Czech Republic. To compare living costs see here:

The aim of the project, funded by EU, managing authority the Czech Operational Program Research, Development and Education, is to support the development of international mobility of research staff at CULS Prague.

Appendix 1: Guidelines for calculation of normalized H-index
Calculation of a normalized h-index for each senior researcher will constitute one of the appendices included in the project documentation. Researchers in social and human sciences do not have to meet this requirement.
