Applications are invited for a continuing academic position in the area of Chemical, Natural and Healthcare Product Formulation. This is one of four new academic positions in the new, rapidly growing School of Product Design | Kura HangaOtinga in the College of Engineering | TeRāngaiPūkaha at the University of Canterbury | TeWhare Wānanga o Waitaha. The School offers a new, exciting degree programme, the Bachelor of Product Design, with majors offered in each of the three areas below:

  • Industrial Product Design
  • Applied Immersive Game Design
  • Chemical, Natural and Healthcare Product Formulation

The appointee will be involved in developing new courses and supervising students designing formulated products for applications ranging from cosmetics, personal care, skin care, herbal extracts and fragrances to adhesives, slow-release fertilizers and paints. The appointee will likely have a first degree in Chemistry, Cosmetic Science, Pharmacy or related areas and experience in product formulation. An understanding of and the ability to work in a way that is biculturally competent and knowledge of tikanga and tereo Māori will be an advantage. Appointment at Lecturer | Pūkenga level will require at least a Master's degree and above Lecturer | Pūkenga a PhD in a relevant area.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly growing School early in its development and to help shape the future of this new area of teaching, practice and research.

Each major in the Bachelor of Product Design comprises just over one third design courses, just under one half supporting science and engineering courses and one sixth business courses. The first student intake of 140 students was in February 2018 and there is already strong interest from prospective students for the 2019 intake.

The appointee will have a commitment to excellence in teaching of core courses in design at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and will be expected to establish a vigorous research programme. The appointee will be expected to supervise undergraduate design projects, Masters and Ph.D. students, collaborate with others in the University, and to contribute to School, College, and University activities as well as being encouraged to develop links with the wider design industry at local, national and international levels.

The College of Engineering | TeRāngaiPūkaha has extensive teaching and research facilities, and those dedicated specifically to the School of Product Design | Kura HangaOtinga will grow with student numbers as each successive year of the degree is offered over the next few years. The undergraduate degree will include significant hands-on experience in physical prototyping, so there is scope for the appointees to influence the purchase of early resources relevant to their design discipline.
