Category Manager, Sourcing and Procurement
The Business and Site Services Category Manager must be a charismatic, forward-thinking innovator and key contributor in helping BU’s Sourcing and Procurement department be recognized as an industry leader in higher education procurement. The Category Manager will develop and lead the planning and execution of a data-driven category plan for the university’s largest collection of indirect spend categories (~$200-250M per annum), which includes professional consulting, office products, furniture/fixtures, vehicle fleet services, commercial print, MRO, contingent labor, travel, and several others. The Category Manager will also assist Project Executives for purchases associated with larger, capital projects. The Manager is expected to deliver measurable, quantifiable cost and/or process efficiencies using BU’s established Sourcing Methodology, which includes the following stages:
1.) Project Confirmation, Analysis, and Planning, 2) Strategy Development, Competitive Event, and Selection, and 3) Implementation and Monitoring.
The Category Manager is expected to be a skilled influencer and to develop and foster strategic partnerships with internal/external stakeholders and suppliers to understand and align business strategy, market dynamics, supplier capabilities, and spend analytics to develop robust category plans. This includes establishing, implementing and monitoring key measures to manage performance of key suppliers. The Category Manager should also have experience developing and communicating compelling business cases, supported with data/metrics, to generate consensus and buy-in for key initiatives. The Manager will regularly present key initiatives to BU’s senior leadership through an established governance structure that oversees and provides guidance and sponsorship to the most complex process re-engineering and strategic sourcing activities.
The Category Manager will report into the Director of Sourcing Strategy and will directly supervise and develop a staff of two Sourcing Specialists to conduct market research, internal stakeholder needs assessments, and business analyses to identify and execute on cost saving and process efficiency opportunities across the entire university. The Category Manager will collaborate with department shared services staff including a dedicated Data Analyst, Contracts Attorney, and Change Management Specialist. The Category Manager will manage and collaborate with cross-functional project teams, often led by a Sourcing Specialist, to develop and execute on category plan initiatives that optimize the appropriate balance of cost and quality based on defined business requirements. Lastly, the Category Manager will work closely with the Director to develop an annual category plan and will have ownership for future opportunities and monitoring performance against the plan.
B.A./B.S. in Business Administration, Finance, Supply Chain Management, Purchasing or a related field is required. A Master’s degree or above in a related field is preferred, but not required. CPSM certification preferred, but not required. Candidates with a strong project management background may be considered. Results driven candidate with strong interpersonal, communication and advanced negotiation skills required with proven project management skills and proficient Microsoft Office skills. Candidate should have at least five to ten years of experience in procurement, commodity management, sales or marketing. Candidate must be able to manage multiple priorities/tasks simultaneously. Experience with SAP SRM, Ariba (or other e-procurement tools), travel management, facilities, commercial print, fleet management and contingent workforce management also preferred. Results driven candidate with strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills required with proven project management skills, advanced Microsoft Office skills. Candidate should have at least five to eight years of experience in procurement, commodity management, sales or marketing.
